Easy to find in the middle of town with a tower (costs but not much... and mid your head on the way up) with a nice river beside it and nice grounds and old architecture.

In this museum, you can see samples of lace from very different times, from the oldest to the newest. I recommend everyone to visit this museum.

This structure is not for those experiencing acrophobia. While climbing you may look down to the floor inside at any moment and the impression is sort of dizzy. Moreover, up there balustrade is not that high, to your waist so think twice. But if you're daring enough the view will compensate all tribulations. Stunning. You'll see, by the way, how small Vologda is - wherever you turn you see forests or green fields on the horizon.
But their cutest attraction is a lady selling souvenirs to the right of a ticket office. Having no direct relation to the belltower she nevertheless behaves like its guardian and in general is pretty irritated by the fact that people line for tickets. Seeing a teenager riding his skateboard nearby she left her post, pushed though the queue and harangued him on his unacceptable behaviour. Us (and him) were amused to hear that his "goddamn cart" which "was spluttering like a machine gun" could slip from under his feet and "hit a head of some pedestrian" (!). The line, by the way, accumulated at the ticket office because a lady inside disappeared "for five minutes" (as a special sign claimed) but was nowhere to be seen even after a quarter of an hour. We asked our trouble fighter if she might knew the fate of her colleague and got a quip that ticket sellers "are also human beings" and maybe she'd left "to pee a little bit". Thanks God that not to pooh...
So do visit the belltower - you won't regret it. Especially if that feisty clowness still performs there. But please learn some colloquial Russian first!

Speaking honestly, there are not so many places to visit in Vologda. The monastery was our final spot before leaving the town - and I would definitely advise you not to miss it! This monastery reminded me of Tolga monastery in Yaroslavl, which is my personal benchmark of calmness and wellbeing. Territory is accurate and clean, we loved to walk around. Small hint - there is a very nice stall with monastery bread (did not try it), which also sell amazing local sweets! Chocolate sweets and marmalade were exceptional.

We could admire only its exterior - from the kremlin square and looking down from an adjacent belltower (therefrom it's much more fascinating). Standing in front of it we listened perplexed to the run on the mouth of our guide who was seriously telling us a story 'bout a brick falling on Ivan the Terrible's head. It never occured to her that even if a half-brick had fallen on the regal skull from the cathedral's ceilings (average height there is about thirty meters) it would have cracked it in two (maybe it would have been a better twist of Russia's history?). Long live fake news!
That rubbish didn't spoil the impression though. Toke another look at this masterpiece from the place Volodga was founded. It's behind the park on the Volodga river embankment, not more than a half-an-hour stroll. Go there, you won't regret it, really.

Lots of old bits and bobs to see although the collection is understandably quite limited. The staff there were extremely friendly to me and I had a nice time being shown everything. if you want to see a little of the past then this is a nice way to do it.

Close to town and a nice place to go to chillax a bit. Right by the river with benches to enjoy the view.

We discovered this next to the walking bridge over the Vologda River. If you didn't know what it was, you may not understand that this is the monument to 100 years of outdoor electric lamp posts. We laughed out loud when we saw it. The dog sculpture says it all.

As always? Two banks and a river in between? Not at all. The river surface is still and culming. The hauses are old and beautiful, churches among them, including a monastery, where the main cathedral remembers Ivan the Terrible. Vologda at that time was almost a capital but then a bad occasion happened, and a brick fell on the tsar's head... No one would make a capital of a town that was just about to kill him. Nevertheless Vologda is still there, old, beautiful, generously giving its laces, sweets, views and memories. Try its coffee and cakes anywhere in the city or find a cafe just at the far end of the park after the letter O monument, take a coffee, gaze at the water, taste a cake. Build your memories up.
