This was a great way to spend a half day in Monterey. Exhibits are very well done, and you need to make sure you go to the various feedings during the day. We’re from Chicago, so this is not as large as the Shedd Aquarium that we normally go to, but we still thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Get there early as the line to get in is long, and feedings start almost right away.

This is a must-do in Monterey. There are great views of the ocean and wildlife. Make sure to stop along the way at various points to see the wildlife in the water.

Stayed here during a recent trip to see Pinnacles National Park as it had a lot of other things to do in the area. The entire place is beautiful and there is so much to do here.

I remember coming here as a kid, back when the train was open.
Always a great place to let the kids run loose.

After enjoying the aquarium for the afternoon, my family drove back to our hotel in Pacific Grove, but I decided to walk the trail along the boulevard. The first thing I saw on the south side of the Hopkins Marine Station was a beach filled with dozens of harbor seals. I snapped some photos and walked, admiring the rock formations along the coast and the views out to see and up and down the coast. It was a great walk along a beautiful shoreline with lots of interesting things to see. Definitely worth at least a drive by when you are in Monterey or Pacific Grove, but ideally you can spend an hour or so taking your time along the path and really admiring the beauty of this shoreline.

The wharf area was very rustic and dated place, not too much to see and a number of shops closed which we guessed was due to covid!! The scenery is absolutely beautiful though like something out of a film and so many sea lions

Between Cannery Row and Old Fishermans Wharf is Coast Guard Pier, which actually provides a better and closer view of the resident California sea lions than the stringers along the Old Fishermans Wharf.

Although our tour guide explained all the people in the monument, John Steinbeck to a Madam, I don't remember them all. The scenery was beautiful and a lot was to be learned about the people in the monument.

... right up the hill from the Navy Lodge I'm staying at here in Monterey. I was here for 10 days back in May I think it was and I would have definitely come here to hike if I would have known about it. Really nice, easy trails to navigate. Is perfect weather today. Tried the short and easy Skyline Trail first which had a few epic views of Monterey and the bay. Then made a big loop with the Iris and Rhus Trails. They were up and down a little - a bit steep(ish) in a couple spots. Then I finished with the Jacks Peaks Trail which Wasn't all that difficult either. I guess I jacked up my knee some more With the almost three and a half miles I did here. It's been hurting a few days but now it really feels on edge. Not a good way to start my upcoming trip to... Oh yea, I was thinking a little about Dan and Mary's son Jack and his wife Alexa today because of the name. I think they're visiting him today or tomorrow. They're good people.

If you haven't been to Monterey before, take the trolley to get an idea of what is different areas of the city. The trolley is free and the entire round trip takes about 20-25 minutes.

This is a very large area extending down towards Big Sur with great coastal views when you can see lots of wildlife: sea otters, sea lions, whales off in the distance and lots of flowers along trails

Right next to our hotel. Ducked into the free museum. Unguided tour. Beautiful grounds. Not for a whole day. Maybe an hour.

As a marine biology student at Stanford in the 1950's, I came with classes, to Hopkins Marine Station, and visited what was left of Doc Rickett's legacy on The Row. We all had copies of his seminal work on Pacific Coast marine biology - "Between Pacific Tides" - and we tried to find all the invertebrates that he so carefully described.
Seventy years later, it is nostalgic to find that some small remnants of his work is left (if you would like to read his book, the MBAQ has it in their bookstore), and especially gratifying to introduce a grandchild who wants to be a "biologist" to this fascinating subject.
Most visitors don't know that the "bike path" along Cannery Row is actually the old Southern Pacific railroad right-of-way that served the canneries and the tourists in Carmel, and that Doc Ricketts was killed by a train at the crossing just in front of the current Aquarium.

San Carlos Cathedral is the oldest stone building in California. Park up for free on the street outside and go in and sit quietly. You will feel the peace and it will surround you.
