- Cathy S3 contributionsAlthough there are other tourists also in the gorge and swimming , doing the same thing, having a wetsuit and mask/snorkel that were fitted to my size and my eye sight prescription mask made the tour so much more, as I could see better and all the photos were taken by our guide with a underwater camera. They included transport and explained about the history of the area. - giada8 contributionsNice and easy trip, they picked us up on time and they were always punctual throughout the stops. The guide and the driver were friendly. For the first stop, the gorge, you need trainers and bear in mind it's very windy. The second stop, Damnoni, is a very nice beach. The boat trip was great, very beautiful view of the coast. Preveli was amazing! Although there are many people and the toilets are terrible. Finally Plakias was nice. Everything went well and I'm happy I did it. I would have taken off Plakias and stayed in Damnoni, because there isn't enough time there to swim, and then in Plakias we really just had lunch. There are round stones in the water, so wading shoes are recommended. Open terrace cafeteria with toilets excists. - Sally DPortsmouth, UK7 contributionsI recommend this day trip, its a lovely day out. The pick up and drop offs were well organised. The scenery was spectacular driving through the mountains from Chania and there was a stop to take photos. At Damnoni beach we took the boat to Prevali beach with its amazing palm trees. Those who were much fitter than me climbed up paths to the top to see the beatiful views of the coast. After a 2hr stay we went back by boat to Prevali Beach and back on the coach to Platinas. There was an hour stop to eat lunch. I would advise bringing toilet paper for the stop at Prevali beach as it is very busy and it had run out! Manolis got in touch with us after we booked via the Viator App, to arrange our transfer. He was kind and helpful with any questions we had. He truly went above and beyond to accommodate us!
I appreciate the Logo of Cretan Explorer is on their Van and as their WhatsApp Logo. It meant we immediately recognised the vehicle when it came to collect us.
Transfers are from the Plaikas region.
I couldn't recommend this experience more. It was the highlight of mine and my partners trip to Crete.
The scenery is amazing. Along our trek starting at the Waterfall, we were immersed in the natural beauty of the Mountains and river. The gentleman who led the trek had an extensive knowledge of the wildlife and history of the area. We walked through some land, saw gardens growing and array of exotic fruits, and even bumped into a friendly horse!
The Banana Garden was the perfect way to end our hike.
The banana garden is reached by a bridge crossing the river and once you cross the garden is so tranquil. After a refreshing juice and delicious lunch made by his wife, the owner walked me round the garden to show his fruit trees and other plants and wildlife. A truly spectacular experience.

We were in peak tourist season (Aug 15) and we were the ONLY people in the river. It was amazing to be in such a beautiful location and splashing around in the river and on the rocks with no other tourists around. Be aware that the waterfall area at the beginning of the walk is pretty crowded and the water is VERY COLD (think Cape Cod beaches in May/June) but you don't have to go into the waterfall part if you don't want to and so then it's just a few steps in the water (but if you want to go to the waterfall you'll have to brave the cold). the water every where else was cool and refreshing. Wear shoes with a good grip (eg Teva, Keene sandals not flip flops). the rocks were surprisingly NOT slippery, but you still want to have good footing walking around. Not too easy to reach (for example from Hersonissos over 2 hours driving by car) and then you have to use steps up and down but it is not too long walking. If you enjoy views on the road - mountains, sea from the top of some mountain etc, superview to/from the beach, walking in a palm-park, swimming - worth to visit it! Also worth to know - there is a river where you can swim also (specially important in a case if a salty sea-water hurts your skin for some reason). The beach is sandy and the sand was really hot.
There are also available services like shower, restaurant etc. There are quite many people but I would not say it is overcrowded - sure if you prefer some beach to be alone then it is not for you but hard to expect any beach like this with a good asphalt road etc built just for you :)
P.S. Also some boat-trips are organized to this beach.
