As a solo woman this was a fantastic way to travel, as I joined an existing group of two for the camping part of it, then travelled solo onto Kasane (Chobi National Park) and Victoria Falls where I stayed in hotels. Maria tailored the trip to meet my requirements and was efficient and courteous in answering my questions. The highlight for me was the camping as it is the best way to get up close with animals, but you must be prepared to 'rough it' a bit - camp bed and en-suite long drop toilet and bush shower (with hot water) - but all comfortable. The elephants came to us one night - I looked out my tent window and all I could see was elephant. The guide was dedicated in seeking out the animals and the three camp staff were efficient and friendly. The first night I slept on a mattress in the open at the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans - wow, what stars. Then two nights camping at a mobile camp in the Okavango Delta, a night R&R in Maun, then three nights camping in Moremi Game Reserve. The number and variety of animals and birds sighted exceeded my expectations. My favourite sighting was the pride of three lionesses with their eight cubs.

Walking Stick tailor made our 13 day safari through Moremi, Khwai, Savuti and Chose National Park, including 2 nights Mokoro safari in a community area close to Moremi.
The email communication before the trip was always precise and the response time short.
Our guide was very experienced and patient who was luckily a great wildlife tracker. We had losts of wonderful sightings with liones, lion babies and leopards.
Our service crew (Truck driver, chef and camp site assistant) were very friendly and attentive. It was always nice after a day safari packed with great sightings, sat a the camp fire and sip a G&T. Sometime, an elephant or a small group of zebras was a just few steps behind the tent. We enjoyed our trip very much.
If you fancy the rustic way with mobile safari to explore the magnificent wildlife in Botswana, Walking Stick is an experienced and reliable local tour operator with good value.

We embarked on an unforgettable adventure with Bush Ways Safaris, guided by the expertise of Moscow and Gabriel. Their deep knowledge and passion made the experience extraordinary, expertly catering to the diverse interests of our group, from birders to wildlife enthusiasts.

Each vehicle is equipped with a water filtration system, refrigeration, and plenty of storage, ensuring a seamless safari experience.

    3. Unmatched Wildlife Encounters
Botswana offers a wildlife experience like no other. We witnessed dramatic scenes—lions at sunset, elephants rushing to a waterhole, and a newborn buffalo calf taking its first steps. The diverse landscapes, from lush forests to the Kalahari’s sandy dunes, provide a dynamic backdrop for wildlife, making every safari drive feel like a live documentary.

    4. Community Engagement
Bush Ways places great emphasis on supporting local communities. We saw firsthand the positive impact of their initiatives, including supporting women’s crafts and local education. The trip also highlighted how tourism can empower communities, ensuring a lasting, positive influence.

    5. Cultural Immersion
Our cultural exchange with the San Bushmen deepened our understanding of Botswana’s history. The San’s knowledge of the Kalahari’s plants and animals is invaluable, and their storytelling during a walking tour gave us insight into their ancient way of life. Their deep connection to the land emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts.

    6. Culinary Delights
Dining in the bush was an experience in itself. From flame-grilled steaks to aromatic lamb tagines, every meal, prepared over an open fire, was a treat. Freshly baked bread, cakes, and pastries added a touch of luxury to our rustic surroundings.

    7. Adventure & Exploration
Our trip was filled with thrilling moments, from rugged safaris in mopane forests to peaceful mokoro rides on the Kwai River. The beauty of Botswana’s landscapes, with its vibrant dragonflies and medicinal plants, highlighted the harmony between nature and traditional knowledge.

    8. Modern Infrastructure & Amenities
Botswana’s tourism infrastructure is impressively developed, making it easy to access essential services. The well-maintained roads and convenient amenities along the route, including airlift medivac services, ensure both safety and comfort for travelers.

    9. Sustainability & Conservation
Bush Ways is committed to responsible tourism, prioritizing sustainability through eco-friendly practices and supporting local conservation efforts. Their approach ensures that Botswana’s natural beauty remains preserved for future generations.

    10. Prime Locations

It’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.

November is the ‘wrong’ time of the year to go to Botswana. It was hot, oppessively hot!
But, back in the comfort of our urban home, editing through the photos, we are flooded with memories of awesome sightings. All the discomfort of the heat and bush toilets totally forgotten and only the enchanting experiences live on, forever ours to reminisce.

We booked the ‘Okavango Expeditions: Safari Authentic - Maun to Kasane Mobile Safari’ via an agent Cape Town, Verity Bester from Uyaphi.com. We flew into the Moremi on a small plane and were welcomed by our guide, Maikano Phale (Maiker) and his Land Cruiser. Off we went on the safari vehicle for 9 days of adventure.

During our time in the Moremi, Kwai Conservancy, Savuti and Chobe Riverfront we saw so much thanks to Maiker and his vast understanding of animal behaviour. He could anticipate their next moves, and could often steer us to be in the right place at the right time. From waiting for a Leopard to return to its abandoned feast, to ensuring we had the best view at a water-hole to witness predators, scavengers and prey all descend upon it simultaneously to drink. Maiker knew to return to sleeping wild dogs, just before they would wake up again, so we could bear witness to the very vocal and energetic interactions amongst the pack, as they enthusiastically greeted each other after their slumber, before heading off to drink and hunt.

Lucky for us, Maiker has a special interest in birds and could quickly spot and identify them, both visually and by their calls. Overall he was a fantastic guide with a patient and friendly disposition and we are immensely grateful to him for giving us a memorable experience.

Our gratitude also extends to the rest of the crew (MK, Sechaba, Chika, Goaba and Mobole). They were all lovely and kind and worked incredibly hard. Cooking and pitching tents in 40 degrees plus is no easy task. The food was tasty, more courses than we needed, drinks were always offered with a smile, the tents and beds were comfortable, we had enough water in the shower buckets to keep us clean and refreshed. On the night of my husband’s birthday, all the crew came to the dinner table singing harmoniously with their deep voices and presented him with a delicious birthday cake. It was very special, so a big thank you to the guys. Oh and I want that lemon sponge cake recipe please!

Okavango Expeditions truly delivered what their slogan promises - ‘a safari experience of a lifetime’ (even in November).

Our Botswanan safari with Gideon and his crew was amazing. Their knowledge of, and passion for, the natural environment was clear from Day One. This was our first visit to Africa and we were not sure what we were going to experience. Camping in the wild gave us the opportunity to see animals big and small up close and away from large groups of people. Words cannot describe what it is like to see some of the animals you've read about or watch in documentaries in their natural habitat for the first time. This was an experience beyond our usual day to day lives but the briefings and guidance we received from the team made us feel safe during our time in the bush. We will never forget this. Our tent was very comfortable and large enough for a 185 cm tall person to stand up in and we appreciated the private toilet facilities attached to the back of the tent. Mikey, our Botswanan Master Chef, consistently produced wonderful meals in the bush kitchen and we loved sitting around the bush television at night, hearing the sounds of animals roaming around. We allowed 12 days to visit Magkadikgadi, Moremi and Chobe National Parks and Khwai Concession. All very different locations and offering wonderful wildlife experiences. Be aware that the driving time between Maun and some of these locations takes longer than it looks on a map due to the condition of the roads so if you want to visit them all, allow plenty of time. Also be prepared to be flexible as you are travelling in remote places and things don't always go to plan. We enjoyed this trip so much that we hope to do another one in the not-too-distant future. Ke a leboga to Gideon and your team, Anne & Paul.

Ever left a destination grinning so hard your face hurts? That was our experience of Botswana hosted by Joe from Thru the Lens. Joe and his team were so incredibly gracious, professional and kind in providing great campsites and camp experiences from which our photographic journey of the Moremi Game Reserve began and ended. That journey was epic!!! Joe Ramsden is a tracker, animal behavioural expert, gifted photographer and all round great bloke. His expertise, at all times, placed us in the perfect position for the perfect image. The bloke is a modest genius! If you are considering a trip to Botswana, seek out Thru the Lens Photographic Safaris Botswana. 10/10... absolutely amazing....

My partner and I are travelling by motorbike through Africa. We wanted to see the Okovango Delta but didn't want to waste money renting a 4x4. We found the orange 'Okovango Scenic Flights' desk in Maun airport very easily. They were much more straight forward to book with than the other companies as they quoted the price per person ($200, with no hidden additional costs) for the 1 hour scenic flight and had a variety of different sized planes to accomodation different sized groups. We did not have to wait for more people to make a larger group which really helped us with our last minute booking. We were given free choice of when to go (early morning and late afternoon best for game viewing) that day or the next. The entire team were professional and very friendly. We got to see lots of elephants, giraffes, ostrich, wilderbeast as well as some of the delta's waterways. It was such an incredible experience which we will never forget. We would highly recommend this company to others 👍🏼
