My wife and I travelled this pass heading south from Avontuur to Knysna on a Sunday in early March 2024. We were fortunate to have clear skies and warm weather throughout. This allowed us to appreciate the full splendour of the many breathtaking views and impressive engineering feat that Thomas Bain and the construction crew achieved.

In clear dry weather this pass is achievable in a normal sedan/saloon car, but I recommend using at least a 2-wheel drive SUV (as we used) to ensure you have sufficient ground clearance. If tackling the pass in wet weather then a 4 x 4 would be highly recommended.

If intending to use this pass I recommend familiarizing yourself beforehand with the excellent series of videos produced by Mountain Passes South Africa. This gives insight into what to expect and provides guidance on how best to drive the pass.

The description was “moderately challenging”. It’s a bit more than that. Just beautiful at the river. Perfect for private swimming. If you find my driver’s licence in the river (fell out when I took out my camera) please return it!

A great trip out with Brian at a quiet time and just the two of us on board. It was too rough to pass out the heads but stilll a good fun ride around the bay. No need for nerves and loads of sights to see.

    Bucket list stuff!

The Southern Yachting Academy has it all! Cutting edge & self-paced course content ~ brilliant for distance learning.

The biggest win for me was being able to complete the entire practical course plus the exams in only 7 days. All thanks to world class instruction from Captain Ben and Owner Mark Orpen (class act).

The cherry on top is the exquisite setting of the Knysna Lagoon. Unforgettable experience, a must for wanna-be sailers!

By far the best charter flight we've been on in SA. Scenic views over Knysna and surrounding areas, from the forests to the beach was incredible to see at sunset. To experience this in a eurocopter is not something you get to do easily along the garden route. An absolute must do!

It was such a great experience to rock the route with you!
I sometimes wished the day was longer to fit in more fun activities, hikes etc
Everyone could find enough time to make one adventure for themselves e.g. bungy
Loved the insider coffee, lunch and cheesecake spots.

I would strongly reccomend the fishing trip, tons of bonitos and yellowfin strolling and nice Red Romans and others with deep fishing.
Ideal for expert fishermans not so confortable for kids and families.
