My wife and I travelled this pass heading south from Avontuur to Knysna on a Sunday in early March 2024. We were fortunate to have clear skies and warm weather throughout. This allowed us to appreciate the full splendour of the many breathtaking views and impressive engineering feat that Thomas Bain and the construction crew achieved.

In clear dry weather this pass is achievable in a normal sedan/saloon car, but I recommend using at least a 2-wheel drive SUV (as we used) to ensure you have sufficient ground clearance. If tackling the pass in wet weather then a 4 x 4 would be highly recommended.

If intending to use this pass I recommend familiarizing yourself beforehand with the excellent series of videos produced by Mountain Passes South Africa. This gives insight into what to expect and provides guidance on how best to drive the pass.

This was a wonderful place to visit and reflect. The church is beautiful and has a lovely garden. It was a great stop over.

This view point on the road to Brenton on Sea, is well worth a stop.
From here there is a great view of Knysna Lagoon & the town beyond.

My wife and I went up to the Cloud 9 lookout recently and the word “spectacular” springs to mind, but probably doesn’t justify the views on offer. Definitely a fantastic view point and well worth a trip.

Nice drive! Great views. Not a "Woah! Special" kinda drive as I thought it would be, but definitely nice.

Road is strictly 4x4, but the 360 degree view is worth the drive. Make the effort and take the turn off. There are some benches at the top - worth sitting on them for a few minutes and just enjoy the view.

It was a lovely drive to the memorial (in the nature reserve, so there is a entrance fee to the area). The big tree and memorial stone are a beautiful homage to Dalene Mathee. Flush toilets and a lovely picnic area and short walks are available from the memorial.

The Sedgefield lagoon mouth is very picturesque with an abundance of wild life whether the tide is in or out. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Whenever I am down in Knysna, which is quite often, I enjoy seeing so many stunning old buildings. St Georges is very photogenic and well worth the visit.
