- Aussie_BinturongQueensland, Australia336 contributionsI took a tour and had the opportunity to listen to a gentleman in his 80s with lived experience. It is definitely worth doing when in Cape Town.Written 10 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- WaynegreavesScunthorpe, UK151 contributionsThe rollercoaster of emotions one experiences along your journey through the museum is down to the professionalism in the display, layout and information. This is how a museum should be.Written 4 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Jennifer VPuerto Armuelles, Panama733 contributionsIf you want to get a sneak peek into our South African history, then a good place to visit would be the South African Airforce Museum. It is a humble establishment tucked away within the Ysterplaat Airforce Base. It does not have a lot of fanfare to announce its location with a plain sign to welcome you onto the property. There is limited parking outside the building. There is no admission fee but donations are most welcome. The museum is very small but well laid out with beautiful artifacts, photographs and artwork. There are restrooms available inside the museum. There is a little museum shop which mainly sells books, hats and keyrings. Alongside the museum building, is a small hanger with a few small aeroplanes and odds and ends contained therein. It was a pleasure to see some veterans showing their grandchildren around the museum. We were fortunate enough to be invited to watch the monthly start up of the Shackleton Aeroplane (last serviceable version in the world). The whole exercise was well organised, safety measures well adherred to (even the removals of caps and hats before the propellers started). Cameras are permitted within the museum and whilst the Shackleton was in operation, but otherwise cameras are not permitted due to the security of the area. This is a working base, so respect and adherence to instructions is expected at all times. This visit was a pleasure and recommended. As said previously, the museum is very small and humble but still a pleasure to enjoy what has been treasured in their glass cabinets.Written 28 June 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Horse91dancerHorsham, UK226 contributionsHaving both lived in Cape Town, and now being a regular visitor, I was really surprised to stumble on this little gem! Is is so close to the Waterfront and well worth a visit. They do not charge an entrance fee, but ask that you make a donation. It is housed in what was once the supervisor of the infectious diseases section’s house! The various rooms are set up as exhibits. The dental surgery is the stuff of nightmares (for me anyway!) There is a great atmosphere, and the staff are helpful. Well worth a visit.Written 15 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ashley LCape Town62 contributionsAnd four years (since my last review) later the museum has still not reopened! Some maintenance was apparently done to the building last year, but there is still no sight of an open gallery.Written 10 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
