A beautiful building but so sorry to see how streetsleepers and people who just do not through their rubbish into dustbins , that is provided, has run down this landmark

I am not sure this place is worth a visit for the general tourist but I would certainly recommend it to a Catholic visitor looking to celebrate mass. It does not look like much from the outside and there are many vagrants and beggars in the vicinity even though it is opposite the South African parliament building.

It is rather subdued and cold inside compared with the churches I am used to in Brazil and some of the Stations of the Cross look almost like abstract paintings.

However, it has a good atmosphere and I was welcomed by the priest after Sunday mass. I attended several masses and it was a pleasure to be a brief part of this Cape Town community where people of all backgrounds come together in spiritual communion.

Now a museum, at this site the first 'Sendinggestig' was founded during the early 1800s. The mission of the gestig (meeting house) was to spread Christianity among groups outside the European realm. The bible was read together with interested people from among the Khoi, San, freed slaves and enslaved people. The latter only with permission of their owners, who were generally not keen on collaborating, as once coverted enslaved people who were married and had children could not be sold separately anymore! Gradually the 'gestig' developed into a church (1820 first minister appointed).

During the 1970s the church was restored with public funds and turned into a museum. Entry is free of charge.

One of the older mosques in the southern suburbs of cape town. Its official name is masjid Ahmediyah.

A few years ago the mosque received a major revamp and a much used hall was added including some extension to the floor space.

The hall section has a commercial section which generates income for the masjid. The mosque offers madressa classes, Urdu and has several talks on current issues. All prayers are conducted including Friday congregational prayers.
