The Tshokwane Trading Post & Picnic Site has always been one of my favorite picnic spots within the Kruger National Park. Compared to other picnic spots in the park, it offers a more formal experience with a shop and restaurant. Yet, it still provides the option of renting a gas canister and skottel for cooking in the bush. As it is located between the Skukuza and Satara rest camps, it is a very popular picnic spot and can get quite busy, especially during lunchtime. The shop stocks a nice variety of items, and the restaurant (which also provides takeaways) serves the best venison pies in the park, in my opinion. My friend also told me that their Roosterkoek (traditional bread cooked over an open fire) was the best they tried in the park. If you are planning on visiting, it's worth noting that there are great game viewing opportunities in the surrounding area. We were fortunate to have an incredible lion sighting within a few minutes' drive from Tshokwane. I always have a great time visiting, and I definitely recommend making some time for it.

As the Conquered Victor Sculpture is easy to find and behold, it is a must see. It depicts two kudus in battle with their horns locked and is a beautiful representation of the wildlife, and their dynamics, within the Kruger National Park. The statue is in a good condition and includes some informative signage nearby. If you are short on time, a quick visit to this impressive artwork is definitely worth it.

The Albasini Ruins is a heritage attraction that can be visited just within the Phabeni Gate of Kruger National Park.

Here you will find the ruins of a 1850's trading post built by Portuguese trader Joao Albasini in what was then called Magashula's Kraal. The post was where goods such as clothing, metal, beads and food were traded between Portuguese colonials, Boers and indigenous people.

Albasini only stayed here a couple of year before relocating to Ohrigstad. The trading post eventually fell into ruins in subsequent decades. The ruins remained and were reported upon by various park rangers to visit the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today you can pull off the main Doispane Road to see the ruins of the Albasini trading post. You'll also find a display of archeological finds as well as information about the history of the post, the founding of Kruger National Park and its early notable rangers. You'll also learn about local villages and inhabitants of the area prior to and at the beginning of the establishment of Kruger NP.

It is a good stop to make if you are a fan of history and want something quick and short to do in addition to game drives if you plan to enter/exit through the Phabeni Gate.
