The Railway Journey of a lifetime. Unbelievable experience from start to finish.
Pretoria Station is beautiful and the meet and greet from the Rovos staff was a lovely welcome. We took a tour of the Museum and the Engine Sheds which resulted in some stunning photographs.
The cabin suite was outstanding, beautifully decorated. We went for the Deluxe suite and was not disappointed. Everything worked perfectly.
The staff are so helpful and accommodating.
The meals are out of this world with wine pairing on the lunch and dinner menu. The sommeliers knowledge was very good. The food service was its usual professional level. The dining cars, like the bedroom were beautifully turned out.
We had two 'game drives' which were also very good. My one and only criticism was the coach to get us from the train to the Matobo venue was rather cramped and uncomfortable.
Plenty of animals to see at the Hwange National Park and again all very professional. A lovely sundowner followed the tour.
Cocktails on the Observation car in the sunshine is very hard to beat.
Purchased a few items from the on-board gift shop (lapel pin, tie pin and a few caps) to take back to the UK.
I loved the fact that Rovos sorted out the Visas and we just had to pay the ladies on the train. All very seamless.
The arrival at Victoria Falls Station was so picturesque and nostalgic.
So what was there to dislike about this 4 night journey............absolutely nothing. A real journey of a lifetime and finances permitting we will do it all again in a few years time.

The Blue Train is an iconic piece of South Africa’s patrimony and a lovely elegant way to leisurely travel between Pretoria and Cape Town. The food is overall quite good, the wines well-paired to your meal choices and the service is efficient if perfunctory. The cabins are truly clever in combining old-style luxury into a small space: the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom ( we had a tub, no shower) was sufficiently large to actually take a bath while watching beautiful countryside slip passed. The TV was superfluous - far better had it shown a real time map of the train’s progress or be replaced with additional storage. The various lounge cars were beautifully appointed areas where bar service was wonderful and friendly. Due ti circumstances not always under the company’s control, the train schedule can be hit-or-miss with quirky work-arounds such speeding up at night to catch-up lost time which does affect the quality of sleep since it can be quite noisy chugging along at higher than normal speeds (bring earplugs just in case).
