What travellers are saying
- I would highly recommend acacia Africa to everyone, in fact I have told several people about my trip as they were amazed by my posts online and wanted to book themselves. I was a solo traveler and opted to not camp and have accommodation throughout. If you enjoy camping this is a perfect trip for you as some of the places we stayed were amazing. For those who do accommodated it was brilliant out of all the places we stayed I wasn’t happy with two and that was only because we had been spoilt elsewhere. Great value for money all round. I met so many amazing people and would deffo do more trips with acacia.
I was also a bit worried about it being a participation tour but it was actually fine as it was doing basic chores like washing up and helping with dinners and lunch etc.
My main worry was food as I have some allergies and also because I had never camped before and a lot of the dinners were made literally it the middle of nowhere sometimes just a bbq. This being said our rep was literally the best he was professional, knowledgable beyond belief and really funny. Having such a great rep really makes a difference on a tour like this. He would make sure everyone was happy and when it came to optional activities these would be communicated well and anything you wanted to do in general he would give you information and even book it for you. I have to also praise him for the amazing food we ate daily, I was amazed that I actually could eat everyday ( due to my allergies) and it was amazing food, I even put on weight lol and didn’t once have a bad belly. The itinerary is very jam packed and sometimes you are in the truck for 9 hours but there are regular stops to eat drink and use the restrooms - but be prepared for a lot of card games, Netflix’s and reading lol . Although these journeys were long it was worth it to see all the amazing things and places we saw.
I had never done a trip like this before so it was very interesting how it all works but by day 3 your used to the truck life and you don’t always have to bring your luggage back n fourth as it stays in the truck in your own personal huge locker which is locked.
I would recommend lots of luggage locks , a torch as even if your accommodated you walk back to your room in the pitch black, good zoom camera, rain mac , hoodies as well as warm clothes as some of the mountain destinations are freezing and a pack of cards lol (uno) (wizards)
Special thanks to Gee ( rep) and wessel (driver) you were both amazing and made my 1st solo group trip the best so far.Written 13 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- First of all the safari pass is a big rip off! They do not use this money as they say. It is more money for the owners. At the start of the tour we met at the hotel, very nice however the first leg of the trip was with the owners. We were treated like we were uninvited guest. Like they payed for the trip and we were along for free. No we paid Over $6000 us dollars. The owners talked among themselfs for over 4 hours while we tryed to sleep. They even went on the first safari with us and we had no say as to where to go or what to see. The guide smelled like garlic. every day. His dental care was bad and ever time he talked it smelled! They say dinner is included most of the time and they do not give you a drink for dinner. Like milk, water, soda, etc. Yes, alcohol is not included. Of course. Also some places they give you a 1 course dinner! Some 3 course! They do not explain this when we book! All the good reviews, beware! IF you can check the IP# and that is difficult, it is usually from the owners themselves or friends of theirs! We run out of gas one time and lucky we were out of the desert and they were selling gas on the black market just where we run out. Very lucky or we would of missed our Victoria falls tours! They tell you to tip everyone. The owners should do this in advance since they make a huge profit! Do not tip! DO not use this company for your own good.Written 18 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- I did the camping option of this tour, and having previously overlanded around Africa with other operators, I was not disappointed. The truck/tents/day-to-day is much the same - so long as people accept that sometimes there will be long driving days, you need to pitch in with chores, and also take responsibility for yourself and your stuff there will be no problems. There is no point coming to Africa and then complaining you don't have free towels and soap every night, or your bed was creaky. Again, it is always just one or two people who genuinely don't seem to have read the dossier rather than the norm.
Our guide Colin was hands down the best guide I have ever had, there is honestly nothing he could have done better. Our driver Philip was also a great guy with the biggest laugh. Joe was also learning the route, and was quiet but a great cook.
We knew our plan for each day, were told plenty of facts and stories as we went along (Colin would research anything he didn't know and tell us all the next day), so much food, and a few nights were actually accommodated which were a nice surprise after it did rain for a few days. The glamping in St Lucia was perfect!
The itinerary was a good mix of game parks, beach, city, and mountains - my only slight issue is we had 6 straight days of hiking with two nights each in Drakensberg, Ampitheatre and Lesotho. But, understandably, if that is where the places are, then that is the order we will visit.
My only complaint would be having both accommodated and camping tours together. No-one realised there was another option and it meant the group was often quite divided as accommodation was far from the truck and people would disappear to their rooms rather than socialising or doing their turn at the chores. I have spoken to other people who had everyone camping on their tours, so maybe this was just because more chose the other option.
If you want to travel, see as much as you can, and don't mind getting a bit tired and dirty along the way then overland! I will definitely be back again.Written 1 March 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
