In large European cities, the market square and the cathedral (church) were separated. Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. But Pretoria was a small town, so the square was one and was called Church Square, because three churches stood on it consecutively from 1857 to 1905, the last of which was the Verenigde Kerk demolished in 1905. The church was not restored, perhaps because the victorious British didn`t want to create a center of ideological consolidation of the defeated but not surrendered Boers. So it turned out to be a Church square without a church. The square is surrounded by several historically and architecturally significant buildings, the Old Capitol Theater, the Tudor Chambers, the Ou Raadsaal (Old Council Chamber) and the Post Office. However, the most notable is the Palace of Justice, where Mandela and other ANC revolutionaries were tried and sentenced during the historic Rivonia trial. The dominant feature of the square is the statue of President Kruger in a tall hat and with a cane established in the early years of apartheid in 1954. During my visit, the pedestal with Kruger was surrounded by a fence. Probably in order to fight the coronavirus.... I found myself in this square twice in the early morning after arriving in Pretoria and in the middle of the next day. The public in the early morning is not disposed to linger here. Many beggars. Everything is fine during the day. The usual audience for the central square of the city.

The City Hall of Pretoria can hardly be a beautiful building. Built in the New Romanesque style, it resembles the architectural projects of Mussolini in Italy and Speer in Germany. Massiveness is perhaps the word to describe this building. Construction was delayed from 1926 to 1935 due to the global economic crisis. In front of the City Hall is the Pretorius Square with sculptures of the founder of the city Martinus Pretorius and his father Andrius, after whom the city was named in 1855. By the way, the City Hall was built to commemorate the award of city status to this place.

This place is very close to Magnolia Dell/park and easily accessible by transport or walking. It is also very close to Hands on Coffee drive through coffee bar in Justice mahomed. It is a pity that most tour operators, just take their tourists to Magnolia Dell and Huckleberry's and never offer the option of a few minutes walk to the site.
Of remembrance to me and many Pretoria people will be the stone of BOERSTRA, as it is the surname associated with one of the best bakeries then. it was founded by the late Colonel George Boerstra and it is situated in pretoria West where it is presently operated by Sunbake of RCL Foods.

It is a pity that this place is slowly deteriorating due to theft of the brass name tags on the wall . Maybe it would be a good idea to replace them with wooden ones. Anyway, the site adds to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately the name of the street was changed from Queen Wilhelmina to Florence Ribeiro under the new Tshwane Municipality leadership of ANC.. However the place is generally clean and safe to visit in day time.municipality
