What travellers are saying
- Karen BPort Elizabeth, South Africa215 contributionsLots of animals all around.... The only ones we didn't see were the rhino's. We even got to see tortoises, lots of butterflies too as well as all the other animals and the majestic giraffes.
There was lots of soft sand on the roads and we managed to get ourselves stuck. It added to the adrenalin experience of watching out for animals and getting some stones to get us out the sand.
We got to spend the New Years day with my sister and my niece from Australia who had booked into one of the cabins for the week.Written 2 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Shamwari, in English, means My Friend. And what a treasured friend. First ‘met’ in 2010. I am lucky enough to have been reunited with this special friend again and again.
What a magical place. With its green rolling hills, mist-draped valleys, and endless vistas, the landscape has a personality all of its own. And there to be discovered, all the wild creatures that live in its midst.
I stayed at Sindile lodge, a place beyond dreams. With its breathtaking views, and a chance to watch huge herds of elephants drinking from the waterhole below in between game drives.
And the game drives were something else. Courtesy of Mino, “The Only Indian Ranger”, who quite literally went the extra mile. His passion for nature is second to none. He knows – FEELS – where the animals are and we had the most amazing sightings. He is a true ambassador for Shamwari and everything it stands for. The desire to give back, rather than take away. Conservation is key.
A visit to the Born Free rescue centres is a must. There you will find big cats – lions, leopards - that have been rescued from appalling situations, and are now living peacefully where they belong, on African soil, in the tender loving care of Glen and the Born Free team. It is a charity I have supported for the past 40 years and very dear to my heart.
Shamwari is a place like no other. It is life-enhancing and life-changing. If you can, go and find the magic for yourself. You will not regret it – or forget it!
Later on my first evening, tired after a long journey, I announced to one of the lovely members of staff, “I’ve come back down to earth now!” I immediately corrected myself – “No, I can’t have come back down to earth, because I’m in heaven!” We both laughed. I think that says it all!Written 13 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The villa was exactly as advertised with lush amenities and gorgeous views. We didn't realize just how much we would love walking along 'our own beach' for miles without seeing another soul. So incredibly peaceful. The hostess and light house fellow were very accommodating and helpful. We did the self catering option and found the kitchen to be very well appointed. If we are ever in the area again we will certainly stay here. Enjoy the peace.Written 11 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AndyP1998Wakefield, UK1 098 contributionsWe visited 4 day safaris on this holiday. All incredible value and provide unbelievable memorable experiences. The track was perhaps more comfortable riding conditions than the other game drives. However the guide was passionate about providing the best possible game drive as he searched and found the animals. Lunch and snacks were probably a little too spicy for us. However the day was slightly mared by the 10km drive from N2 to the reception. Took well over 30 minutes cos the ruts and potholes and made you wonder if you had done the right thing coming. Certainly wouldn’t have driven my car back home over this trackWritten 24 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jo KWorcester, UK9 028 contributionsIt’s very clear that the wellness of the birds here is a priority. A very small sanctuary hospital 🏥 with staff that volunteer to help.

- FantajanPretoria, South Africa351 contributionsWe were passing through PE and were looking for something fun to do. Unfortunately, we weren't able to book a tour of the factory (be sure to call several days in advance) as we called the morning of and they did not have any availability. That said, it is still fully worthwhile to just come and visit the museum which is free to the general public. They have a lot of old VWs on display and some interesting exhibits on the history of the factory, South Africa, and VWs in general. The museum is showing its age, to some degree, and some of the interactive exhibits didn't work. There is also an upstairs area which is great for kids as it allows them to test their driving skills, take a quiz about South Africa, and draw their own VW models, etc. It was fun poking around and taking fun photos in front of our favorite cars.Written 8 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - zimbotogFleet, Hampshire91 contributionsFree access to the bridge on well-prepared boardwalks and pedestrian tracks from the services area on the highway. The only concern is that the pedestrian parts of the bridge are very narrow and close to traffic speeding past which is a little disconcerting. The bridge is an impressive piece of engineering and the gorge below impressive. Well worth a short walk.Written 15 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
