To visit the Tortuguero park you need to buy tickets from the National Park Online System, you can buy the Cuatro Esquinas ticket if you are visiting the park's canals or doing the Jaguar trail on land (long pants, long sleeve shirt and rubber boots recommended).

Be aware if you want to visit Tortuguero Hill you will have to buy a separate ticket...take the "periferica boat" to get to the main entrance instead of the water taxi it will be cheaper.

There is a lady selling tortillas with sour cream and queso by the main strip of town under a tent next to the water taxi station< best meal on the go you can possibly get>

It will rain almost always, be prepared to get wet. We did the Kayak canal tour and highly recommend it instead of the boat or canoe one.

Best thing we did in Tortuguero. We went with a guide as part of our stay at Aninga lodge. It is a short walk followed by a big staircase to get up to the viewing point.

There is also plenty of wildlife to see on the short walk. We saw the Blue Jeans frogs, Capuchins, amongst others.

Did 3 tours in one day, canoe, walk through the jungle and a night walk. Jessica was informative, helpful and patient with us older folks. We saw Cayman, anteater, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, capuchin, iguanas, basilisks, poison dart frogs, spiders, sloths, opossum, porcupines plus. Price was very reasonable. She also let the ferry operators know when we were arriving and leaving and even made restaurant reservations for us when we asked for a recommendation. A great day on Tortuguero largely due to Jessica. Call her first

We chose to rent kayaks and went by ourselves in the national park. It was awesome! Andreas was of great help and made time for us even though it was way after working hours. I can really recommend this place!

Arcardi garden hostel was a very nice hostel at the caribbean coast of tortuguero. We have even seen tucans on the trees right in the hostel. The room was clean and really comfortable. Especially the service was really good. For our further trip from tortuguero to la fortuna it was no problem to book a shuttle at the reception. The trip was operated by alejandro, one of the owners of arcadi and he told as a lot of very interessting informations of costa rica and showed us even real costa rican traditional breakfast. Just can recommend this hostel.

We booked a night walk with Bernie. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about the animals. He found several red eyed frogs and taught us how to capture amazing night time photos. We would highly recommend Bernie.

Great Tour Guide, he really took care and made sure that we are having a nice experience with him in the jungle.

Did a kayak tour and the night walk, both tours have been great👌

Special is that he is not doing the stuff for the tourists, he does that because loves the animals and the jungle, very enthusiastic guy.

    Absolutelly recommendable 👌👌

    Roots tours: best choice!

Isaac took us with his boat, which has an electric engine ( so no sound and no rowing!).
He provided us with binoculars and off we went. He was very friendly and has a lot of knowledge about the wildlife. We saw many birds but also caymans, monkeys and Jezus Christ lizards who showed us their ability to run over the water. He did everything to make sure we got the best pictures. We returned after more than 3 hours and we were very satisfied!

Victor's immense pool of wisdom and knowledge in giving us a tour was tangible. He knows all about the region, the flora and fauna are in his pocket, and the places we visited with him were beyond what I've ever experienced. As a fellow tour guide, I really appreciate his patience in answering so many questions that I had as a newcomer to this incredible place. Thank you for showing us around and giving us a taste of the jungle and the wetlands, Forever grateful.

Based on the reviews, I connected with them and booked the Tortuguero tour with them. Unfortunately another couple who were also booked with us, opted out at the last minute, so we couldnt do the tour with Riverboat Fransesca, but even then I am writing this review because I was deeply touched at the manner in which Sven went out of his way to help us plan and get us to Tortuguero. It was not easy because while we were to come from San Jose, we werent returning back to San Jose. Sven helped me plan my trip every step, and gave me all the info. He spent a lot of time replying to my emails, talking to me on phone, even though he didnt have my business; just goes to show how committed and genuine these folks are. Not only that, he made me feel comfortable approaching him for so many other tips on Costa Rica as this was our first trip. Sven, thank you so much for your help and assistance.

This was a nice way to end my first day in Tortuguero. It was just me and another gentleman from the lodge, so we both were able to participate (I think it's really a small group thing anyway, but two was a good size). Claire gave the tour; she and her husband take turns, and she knew a lot about cacao, the history, the science and told it in a very engaging and fun way. The demonstration is interactive and we made our own hot cocoa and then our own chocolate bar. After making one bar, you won't look at chocolate the same way - it is hard work.

This guy is amazing! He took care of everything. We really felt in good hands, he would guide and help us anytime we needed something.

I called him a few times for reasons beyond the tours and the service the company he works for provide and he showed us that he is a really helpful person, it was like having an old friend in Tortuguero.

I recommend all his tours, you should take them, they are great!

I did the the canoe tour and the night walk with Jon, i really enjoyed both of them, they were brilliant and I recommend both, he is very knowledgeable and passionate about all the wildlife in the area and is also native from Tortuguero so knows the national park like the back of his hand.

It was raining the evening of the night walk and some of us didn’t have rain coats so Jon was really flexible in us starting a bit later so we didn’t get soaked.
