Shanghai Shopping Guide

Shanghai is a modern, vibrant, and wealthy city with a serious shopping addiction. The Shanghainese have a reputation for being glamorous, fashionable lovers of luxury goods. Who could blame them, though, with such a diversity of department stores, malls, antique markets, and cool vintage shops? From the old-world markets to gleaming new malls, there nearly endless shopping options. These are the neighborhoods you should visit.

Old French Concession

The tree-lined avenues of the old French quarter of the city still offer an air of chic refinement that’s a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of Shanghai. Here you can browse boutiques, unique and funky vintage stores, and curiosity shops like Madame Mao’s Dowry. It’s also the neighborhood to buy local Shanghai-designed clothing.

We tried well over 10 different types of teas and bought a wide variety as gifts, everyday teas and special luxury series at affordable prices.
My regular stop is at Susie's shop at 1051 (close to the entrance), as she speaks English very well and patiently tells the "ins & outs" of various tea she offers.

It's got a great little gift shop where I bought far too many postcards, and they have a nice collection of books and even original copies of Mao's little red book in multiple languages.
The gift shop offers a nice catalog of the collection, as well as original posters and Cultural Revolution era artifacts.

This is THE STORE you absolutely cannot miss if you’re going there for some good shopping: best glasses, coolest and most trendy sunnies and that’s the ONLY PLACE where I could found the CD visor I so desperately...
Coming from the metro going into one of the entrances of the A.P. Plaza Market, you'll enter a bazar with an abundance of gadgets, clothing, souvernirs and bags.

Its vast space and countless number of stores prove irresistible for souvenirs-hunting shopaholics, given its wide variety of fanciful memento to possibly acquire.
The shop keepers weren't giving the hardest sell I had experienced (parts of Vietnam and all of Egypt was much worse!), which made us Aussies more comfortable to walk around and enjoy looking around.

If you tire of the crowds and shops, just take a walk down a side alley and look at the quieter part of town.
Those souvenir shops, forget about it unless you have a really good bargaining skill.
