Upon booking my trip to Peru, I knew I wanted to do some type of trek up to Machu Picchu. Did a lot of research & most treks seemed to extreme for me until I came across the Inca Jungle Trek by Marvelous Peru. It had the perfect combination of hiking & adventurous excursions such as biking, water rafting, hot springs & zip lining. I was a little hesitant at first but after reading all the good reviews, I booked it right away & I am glad that I did! I can personally say that this 4 day/3 night trek had EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS! Never a dull moment!
We had our debriefing/meet & greet with our guide Daniel the day before. He went over what to expect, tips such as how to manage & prepare for altitude sickness. He even assured us that we will do fine & will take things easy if needed. From the get go, he was very attentive & patient with all the questions we had which made us even more excited to start the trek!
The hostels all had the basics necessities we needed - washrooms, showers & beds. They were able to accommodate myself & the two people I was traveling with in a private room at each hostel, which I was very pleased about! There was no hot shower for the first night which wasn’t a big deal after a long day of being active & sweating. The cold shower was actually refreshing. Each hostel also had WIFI which was a winning factor for me. THE FOOD WAS NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING! It was good and the portions were big. We even had different type of appetizers & main dishes each day! Yum!
During the hike, Daniel made sure that we took the breaks we needed & motivated us to keep going. Instead of just aimlessly walking, he educated us about the history of how the Inca’s lived & their traditions & even dropped a few random facts about the plants/birds we walked passed/flew by. One major highlight for me was actually trying the different fruits right off the tree, getting to grind coffee beans at the Monkey House (a pit stop during our hike) & getting our face painted from an achiote fruit. The amount of walking (from the perspective of someone who doesn’t walk often) is manageable & definitely worth it because the views are UNREAL. Pictures won’t do justice, you will have to be there to really take in the beauty of it.
For the excursions - I am not an experienced biker but I felt safe as we were geared up in safety equipment such as helmets, shoulder, knee, elbow & chest pads! Majority of the biking route was downhill, so you don’t necessarily have to be the fittest to enjoy this. You are literally biking through the mountains, which was so breathtaking!
The hot springs were so clean! It was much needed after hours of walking. The water was crystal clear & did not have that sulfur smell which was good. The temperature of the water was just right.
The water rafting was so thrilling & would love to do it again! We even got to visit waterfalls via a detour which I won’t spoil. For the ziplining, I expected a little bit more but we were advised that it was limited due to Covid. The guides made sure everything was secured & they demonstrated each position & rules to us before we went on. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have the confidence to go out of my comfort zone. I zip-lined upsize down hands free, so thank you! Both of these excursions were operated by a third party. We had drivers that drove us from and to our hostels. I was impressed by the organization of how our drivers were always on time or if not, early. Daniel always communicated where we needed to be & when we needed to be ready by.
Of course, we ended the trip at Machu Picchu & it was obviously the main highlight of our trip. Again, photos does not do justice! You must see it! What made it a better experience for us is that Daniel gave us a detailed lesson of the history of Machu Picchu with photos & went even deeper to explain the agriculture & architecture!
Traveling with just a group of girls, Daniel was very respectful & made us feel comfortable. He goes ABOVE & BEYOND to interact with everyone to ensure we were all having a good time. He also reached out to us to confirm if we made it back to Cusco safety even after we had separated ways. Overall, He is very personable, fun & professional, we love to see that in a tour guide! His English is great as well, which was very easy to have conversations with him.
Dan, you the man! Thank you so much for giving my family & I such a good Peru experience. I would 100% recommend Marvelous Peru & Daniel! Hoping to come back to do the Salkantay trek!
