Nice castle with minimal add on, in natural state which is what I like. Not a lot of tourists when I went, so was a bonus. From Okaido walk the way up for the cable car or chairlift to the castle. Wanted to try the chairlift but the weather was too cold. Seems the matsuyama area is famous for mikan (oranges). There at many varieties with different sweetness. Do try.

Stayed for 2 nights in late Jan 2024. The hotel located about 4 mins walk from the Hiroshima station.

As I was early, I deposited my luggage to check in later. The hotel has a spacious and comfortable lobby connecting a coffee place. There are free amenities like toothbrush, body towel, tea and coffee bag, cotton bud, etc to take in the lobby area. But for some amenities like hairbrush and shave kit, these are chargable at 100 yen at the reception.

Room was standard compact for my single room. Just enough space for 1. Room comes with 1 usb port and other charging points. Only has 1 pillow. No drinking water provided, you have to purchase it at the vending machine. Wifi was strong and room was well maintained.

Surprised that there is a public bath at the 10th floor. It comes with 2 large bath, 1 indoor and outdoor. Nice to have the outdoor bath in cold weather.

Check out time is10am, which is quite different from others I have stayed which is the usual 12pm.

I do understand the need to be environment friendly, but charging guests for amenities? Was ok for me as I brought my own. But drinking water? At least have a water dispenser in the hotel for guests to take drinking water. Most likely will not be back.

There is a nice hiroshima okonomiyaki place near the hotel at 6F of Full Focus building. There are many stalls on the 6F, all selling okonomiyaki, you can choose your own.

If you are travelling to Matsuyama from Hiroshima, take the tram no. 5 from Hiroshima station to reach the Hiroshima Port Center to take the super jet. Currently there are discount for tourist at 5600 yen one way. You can email and book ahead using the super jet website by using their Japanese webpage to send a query. Somehow the English webpage does not have this option.

Do note that at the Matsuyama port, the iyotetsu limousine bus from the port to the various area is not available. I did not know and purchased the iyotetsu 1 day pass in advance. Though I can still use the pass within Matsuyama but was not worth the cost if the limousine bus is not available. Taxi from Matsuyama port to dogo onsen cost about 3300 yen.

This has to be one of the most intriguing temples I've visited in Japan. There are countless statues and there's so much to discover. I absolutely loved the cave at the back with all the statues. It's also pretty messy in some places, one open building was stuffed with cardboard boxes and there was lots of rubbish on the floor near there. Make sure that you have lots of time, so that you can make the most of it. And there are many cats onthe grounds.

The villa is a very handsome building, located just below Matsuyama castle and very close to one of the main streets through town. English signage is minimal inside, but entrance is only ¥300 and the building itself is worth seeing if you have time. Nearby, there are a handful of spots where Masaoka Shiki and Natsume Soseki spent time.

A night time visit to Dogo Onsen was far too rushed to maybe wait half an hour for the clock to "perform". It looks great (and very photogenic) at night though, and the foot spa beside the clock was extremely tempting after a hard days' slog ...... if only I'd brought a towel!

It is close to Dogo station, just a short walking distance. It is not a big park but a nice park to walk around and take some pictures.

A beautiful and peaceful shrine near Dogo Park. You have to walk up a steep stairway but it's definitely worth it. I loved walking through the hallway where some old paintings were hanging.

Picturesque period wooden station building, tastefully decorated in cream and green and brought bang up-to-date in housing a 21st Century Starbuck's. Arrived by tram in the the daytime and promptly departed on the last Botchan Train, so had to return hours later for a more leisurely look around.
Believe me, the station is equally delightful after dark with a floodlit static exhibit of a current Botchan Train.

The Okaido Shopping Street is nice but after a while all of these arcade style streets start to look the same. The Okaido Shopping Street was large, clean, and had some interesting shops. I don't really visit any shops, I just like to walk up and down them and see if there is anything unique. This one seemed more lively then others so it was pretty entertaining. Overall, I would say it is worth a quick stroll.

Took a few hours to get there, train part of the way, 300 yen then walked the rest. Lovely temple, if you are into the 88 trail then a must visit of course.

A beautiful small island of the coast of Hojo Town. Very near to Matsuyama and worth a day out (half a day). Once you've walked up to the view point and fed the deer there is not much to do. That said it is a beautiful place to chill out. Popular in the summer with young Japanese who like beach parties.

If glass is your thing, there are beautiful pieces here. A 10-15 minute uphill walk from the Dogo Onsen brings you this museum, in a peacful garden. The exhibits are interesting, and the gift shop has a view surprising pieces too.

I didn't know much about Itami Juzo before visiting but came away quite interested and wanting to watch all of his movies. The museum is well set out and very fresh and modern. Not a huge amount in English but still worth a visit.
