What travellers are saying
- Split boatsSplit, Croatia6 contributionsSplit city became a city because Roman imperor Dioklecijan choose to build his palace only for vacation from all Romans empire, in today-Split city. My advice take a tour gouid to hear and catch up all interesting things. Or book one of ours, Split boat 's cruises where u will hear all about.
For example did u know Split has more sfingas(lady lion) than Egypt? Untouched and in perfect condition with nose and all parts. Did you know that the narrowest street in the world is in Split ? Dioklecijan wasn t stupid, trust me :)Written 5 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Dani HSydney, Australia9 contributionsWalked around the park with a mix of trails and road. A great way to spend a few lazy hours on a relaxed walk. Options to walk up to the top of the hill and see the various churches and view points, or go down to the beaches and laze by the Adriatic. Some excellent views of Split and surrounds from many different angles.Written 10 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- SandramcguireGlasgow54 contributionsThe most intricate interesting fabulous town. Round every corner there is something different. A new shop or restaurant to explore.Written 10 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Deryn HWaterlooville, UK2 191 contributionsWe bought tickets for the bell tower visit only. There were 186 steps up. Some very steep stone steps followed by metal shallower ones which made climbing easier. The views from the top were fantastic and well worth the visit. It was a bit windy but not cold. In the narrow parts the traffic is one way to avoid getting stuck in the more difficult walking areas.Written 17 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- SiberianEmoOmsk, Russia15 contributionsI am not a fan of G of T, but an enthusiast for the medieval fortresses, castles & citadels (for which the Croatian Coast is rather abundant). The fortress is situated roughly a 30 minute bus ride away from the center of Split. Klis Fortress was used in defense of Split against the Ottomans and was held by the Ottomans in 16th-17th centuries. If you want to explore the fortress, allow yourself 2-3 hours. The best way to reach Klis would be by Bus #22 from the HNK bus stop (across from Croatian National Theater). Tickets can be purchased from the booth at the bus stop itself.
The highlights are views of Split, the sea and the surrounding countryside. Another interesting attraction is a church inside the fort. It was converted from the mosque when Venetians recaptured Klis Fortress from the Ottomans. The interior still retains the vestiges of Ottoman/Islamic influence. There is also a museum inside the fortress dedicated to its history.
If you go in the summer months, expect the weather to be a lot hotter than in Split, since Klis is inland. Bring a lot of water and don't spare sun screen (with exception of the structures of the fort, there is not too much shade).
If you have a limited time in Split, not a fan of G of T, or don't care for old forts, you can probably skip it. If you have a choice between Klis vs. Roman ruins at Solin, I would go with Solin. The whole G of T gives it a bit of a gimmicky vibe.
Trip to Klis was still an amazing side-trip from Split and I do not regret visiting it.Written 11 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Scoosh77Wick, UK502 contributionsLoose yourself in the ambience and buzz of the local cafes, restaurants and bars that line this area that runs the length of split from the marina alongside the palace and the waterfront.
A great place to wander and watch the world go by with its unique character 👌👍🏻Written 19 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Miss_renegadePrestatyn, UK310 contributionsGreat activity for a rainy day. We got caught in torrential rain so came in here to keep dry. What a place! We laughed so much on our visit. It won’t take you too long to look around so bare that in mind when visiting.Written 12 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Kate BryantUnited Kingdom23 contributionsThoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Such a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. The wines were exceptional and the hosts were so generous and friendly. I will definitely come back next time I visit Croatia!Written 16 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- 1girl_1passportVancouver, Canada1 021 contributionsStunning, beautiful design and architecture. This is a must see while your in the city.
Diocletian Palace is one of the best preserved monuments of the Roman architecture in the world.
The Emperor's Palace was built as a combination of a luxury villa - summer house and a Roman military camp (castrum), divided into four parts with two main streets.
Southern part of the Palace was, in this scheme, intended for the Emperor's apartment and appropriate governmental and religious ceremonies, while the north part was for the Imperial guard - the military, servants, storage etc.
The Palace is a rectangular building (approximately 215 x 180 meters) with four large towers at the corners, doors on each of the four sides and four small towers on the walls. The lower part of the walls has no openings, while the upper floor is open with a monumental porch on the south and halls with grand arch windows on the other three sides.
Over the centuries the Palace inhabitants, and later also the citizens of Split adapted parts of the palace for their own requirements, thus the inside buildings as well as the exterior walls with the towers significantly changed the original appearance, but the outlines of the Imperial Palace are still very visible.Written 13 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - r0landbrunnerZurich, Switzerland1 716 contributionswhen in Split, a visit to the Mestrovic Gallery is simply a must. there is nothing more to say about.Written 7 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Oscar TegniStockholm, Sweden22 contributionsOne of the best beaches in split. However, it can get very crowded during peak seasons which can dampen the experience. If its during low season, then this beach is a no brainer, if its during peak season then maybe consider one of the other options.Written 6 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Georgia B12 contributionsA pretty good place if you’re a GOT fan and my partner found it interesting.
It is however very small and we had seen it all pretty quickly, this coupled with the entry fee and I wouldn’t say it’s great value for money.
Not a bad spot if you have the money to spend and want to look round, but not a must do if you’re on a budget.Written 18 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Scoosh77Wick, UK502 contributionsThe 10th Century Rotation Bishop, quite an imposing bronze statue situated just outside the Golden Gate. Steeped in history and with a rather famous “big toe” (make sure and give it a rub) it’s well worth a visit and surrounded by a small park with an attractive water feature.Written 19 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Julian M5 contributionsAn old building with the church nave being separated by small street from the bell tower.
There is a small old graveyard next to the church and beautiful seaview towards the Brac island.Written 1 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - starlightShanghaiVictoria, Canada3 540 contributionsLots of colour, with a very vibrant atmosphere. Starts just outside the Silver Gate of the Diocletian Complex and extends even farther eastward. Dozens of kiosks selling flowers, veggies, fruits, honey, and meat. A fun place just to people watch.Written 19 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
