The best time to visit the Summer Palace is usually between May and October, but sometimes I like to take a walk on its vast grounds on a sunny winter day. Even though I have been here several times before, I still find myself captivated by the grandeur and richness of the architecture, the massive size, and the ancient pavilions, palaces, temples, the paintings of the long corridor, bridges, Longevity Hill, the lake, and more.

Because I went there during winter, so it was really cold up there. There are quite a number of temples at the first phase. As you go further up, there will be also temples.

My family was in the area to do some paperwork and decided that before we head home, it would be fun to take our children through this street. It offers something for ever member of the family, bars, ice cream shops, gift stores, retro shops, snacks and clothing. Based on the prices for ice creams and snacks, I’d say everything is overpriced by about 40% but you are in a touristy area so to each his own. The only thing I did not appreciate is the delivery drivers speeding on scooters down a crowded street so if you have small children, you must be vigilant. Cars even go through here too, but at least they were decent about their speed.

This is what would be considered an upscale hutong by Chinese standards. It was originally built by the brother of the emperor. Structures are more substantial and a better building quality than your normal run-of-the-mill hutong.

The houses intermingled with the local shops make for an interesting walk. Twenty or thirty years ago most of Beijing looked somewhat like this.

The shops are neat to browse through and the neighborhood folks are friendly.

We stayed overnight for 1 night on our way to Lingshan Mountains. Lovely little local village with some interesting sights. Great area to stay to explore the surrounding mountains and villages. Many different dried fruits on offer.

A place to come and understand Hutong culture and history. It's better to have a tour guide so that you can fully appreciate and enjoy

I arrived via Nanluoguxiang 南锣鼓巷 Station, lines 6 & 8, visited this hutong and then proceed to Shichahai 什刹海. This stretch of alley was rather quiet, as the majority of local visitors congregate along the touristic Nanluogu south-north alley. I wanted to visit the Wan Rong’s Former Mansion (No. 35 & No. 37) & Keyuan Garden (No. 9). Unfortunately, they were closed, with signs “No visitors allowed”. I suppose they are now private properties.

This section of the wall is rather short but popular especially at night because it is lit up and accessible. The entry can be walk up or cable car at the base of Gubei Water Town which is a very nice new development with great hotels, restaurants and shops. If you go early in the morning you will probably have the Wall by yourself which is pretty cool.

We have decided to make this an annual trip because of how pleasant it is. We look forward to this time of year in Beijing as the heat and humidity has finally passed and before it begins to get cold. The weather is perfect, the water is flowing and the villagers are fantastic and hospitable. If you are looking for an escape from the city life of Beijing, you can’t go wrong visiting the Miyun Bai River.

Easy to go there by subway. Many rickshaw riders peddling for business. Unique way to go about in the streets. Went inside a “preserved” village and the owner explained some history behind her house. Should try Mr Shi’s Dumpling if you are here.
