Temple of Heaven is a must-do as it is a gorgeously preserved site of stunning structures, pristinely kept grounds and opportunities for quiet contemplation if so desired.
My top four favourite places to tour in Beijing and what I would classify as the four “must see” sites are: Forbidden City (Palace Museum), Temple of Heaven and Tiantan Park, Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square.

But on our way back to the hotel, Linda drove us into downtown Beijing for a quick car tour of the biggest sites in the city's center where she provided some interesting local commentary in well-communicated English.
During our trip she instructed us how and where to use our tickets to visit the sites.

The town you can walk through to get to the Great Wall - very "Disneyesque" but nice and worth the views for photographic opportunities.
Simatai great wall is what the Chinese call "wild great wall", it's much less crowded compared to Badalin and Mutianyu, is steep and the steps can be slanted and narrow at places, but offers a spectacular view.

Built from the earth excavated to make the moat around the Forbidden City surmounted by a magnificent temple affording panoramic views of Beijing, Jingshan Park should be the starting point of any visit to Beijing.

For me, this was the most outstanding part of the Summer Palace, a huge pagoda made of wood overlooking the Kunming Lake and the Summer Palace and with views across the lake towards Beijing City.
I spent the day at Summer Palace with my sister who was visiting me from Australia. We enjoyed boating in the lakes and the view of the Tower of Buddhist Incense was just magnificent seen from the middle of the lake.
