What travellers are saying
- Marie NPerth, Australia167 contributionsThe museum is a great place to get an understanding of the history of apartheid and the impact it has had on South African society. It is a complex history and the museum does a great job at helping people understand and appreciate it.
I spent 4 hours there, could have spent more.
You need at least 2 hours to get a brief overview but definitely need more time to really appreciate it. Children may find it a bit overwhelming. The Truth Cafe is also good place for a coffee.
You get a discount if you arrive on the Hop on Hop off bus.Written 30 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Monica EColumbus, OH11 contributionsI would recommend this to anyone visiting Cape Town. It gives you a great understanding of what happened to this community and tipped racial tensions. The guides (“storytellers”) are unique in that they lived there when this was happening so it even more special.Written 23 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Luc Victor.810 contributionsA well curated and maintained museum of motor vehicles, this place is a must see. Although it may seem to be a place only for motorheads, this place has lots to offer. It showcases vintage and classic automobiles, as well as unique contemporary cars that pique ones curiosity and imagination. The museum consists of a series of lovely large buildings housing the vehicles and a main building that has a coffee and souvenir shop one can lounge in. This is one place that is definitely worth the visit.Written 24 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - rsky1124Singapore, Singapore117 contributionsWhat a gem of a museum. Such a huge collection of Vintage cars , train engines and other fascinating vehicles. There is no fee to visit. All the vehicles are maintained to top notch condition. Truly displays the South African transport heritage . A must visit place and leave some great remarks to encourage them to keep the museum running. Sadly they did not have a souvenir shop. Perhaps something they can do for revenue generation and let visitors to take home a memorabilia.Written 8 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Venture593520West Kirby, UK21 contributionsMy husband is an artist and sculptor and will always enjoy a gallery visit and I am happy to accompany him. What made this visit so good was the tour and talk by the in house art historian Rory.
With an encyclopaedic knowledge of the building and the art he kept the group captivated for an hour. If you visit the gallery do attend the tour.
The building is the star attraction and as an old granary seeing the roof where the old silos where is fascinating. The cafe is great food and good value.Written 25 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Luc Victor.810 contributionsOne of the oldest botanical gardens in the continent, the Stellenbosch Botanical gardens showcases the country’s various flora and acts as a conservation center for rare and endangered plants that would otherwise be forgotten. The expertise and care by the staff and university is an integral charm to the success of the gardens. Interestingly, there is a bonsai garden with the oldest bonsai documented in the African continent.Written 24 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Borneo50Melbourne, Australia152 contributionsLesser known than the Apartheid Museum but what a must visit memorial. It's still hard to get our head around these events happening in our lifetime. This museum is an eye opener to the 1976 uprising & makes you shake your head that children were victims of such events. Definitely worth the visit.
