Bab Bou Jeloud A.K.A The Blue Gate, the main entrance to the exciting Medina of Fes, is located to the west of the Medina . Usually your tour of the medina will start here, thus making it a "Must-Know" point . Not the largest/prettiest we have seen in Morocco , but sure worth look .

i just bought a jacket here, not cheap but very good quality. Or do you prefer the other way around? You need to haggle and, if possible, buy a bundle of items to get a better price. That's what fair trade is supposed to be.

Some tourist come here with the idea of offering ludicrous prices and walking away with top notch products. That just doesn't happen. Also it wouldn't be fair for Moroccans who work hard in this industry.

On my way back home i ran into a Zara store at the airport and checked the price of a leather jacket (350 euros). Not much difference with what I paid. However, the product quality wouldn't even compare to the Fez jacket. The smell, the touch, the softness and style would easily put the Zara jacket to shame.

Well preserved old riad in the Fez medina. Now a museum. On the roof there is a tea cafe where you can sit and take in views over the medina.

The Mosque of al-Quarawiyyin is probably the oldest (or second oldest) university in the world. According to the legend it was founded as a small mosque by Fatima al-Fihri , in the 9th Cent. and subsequently developed into a teaching institution, which became the University of al-Qarawiyyin . The has expanded over the centuries to its current size.
The complex of al-Quarawiyyin seems to be very interesting but unfortunately , non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosque . So all we could do is to get a beautiful glimpse of it from a roof top of an adjacent building .

Gorgeous palace, but you only can see from the outside for obvious reasons. You need a zoom lens - atleast a 200mm lens to get a close up of the palace. Not worth the visit

Totally loved our visit to this decaying gem of a palace. The guardian was sleeping on our arrival but following payment of 30MAD each he opened up and advised on the route to take. You are then left to your own devices.
There are hints of the wealth and grandeur from the era of the late 20thC. Some tantalising vinyl records on the wall of one room and an array of cameras and old recording equipment. Make sure you wander through the kitchens to the harem. Sadly the canopy is collapsing giving an indication of the extent of restoration work required. Any westerner getting carried away with the romantic notion of restoring a riad would do well to visit the palace first.
Finally view the artwork created by the guardian. It’s really superb and deserves a wider audience. The gallery room doesn’t really show it off in the best light. I believe the pieces are for sale. His studio is to the left of the gallery room. What a creative space to work in.
This visit probably left the deepest impression on us during our 2 day visit to Fes.

We visited the old Jewish are and cemetery on a tour of Fez. Very few Jewish residents any more (they mostly moved to Israel) but the local people have preserved the area, synagogue and cemetery well. An interesting view into the multi-cultural history of Morocco.

An educational and entertaining experience. My sister and I were shown how the mosaics were made and then given the opportunity to browse at our leisure and did not feel pressured in any way. The assistants were very pleasant and helpful. they asked questions to help narrow down the almost overwhelming selection. The vase I bought (including shipping insurance) was shipped directly to my house and packaged so well it took me almost an hour to get the vase out and clean up the packing materials. If you are looking for quality mosaic/pottery pieces I highly recommend Art D’Argile
