The historic Humbert Memorial which is located at Humbert Street Ballina town Co Mayo was oridinally erected in 1898 to the memory of General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert (1767-1823) and the people who were gave up their lives to try to free their country. The Humbert Memorial is widely regarded as an important part of the heritage of County Mayo.

The memorial was completed in time on the 100th anniversary of the 1798 rebellion. Historically on 22nd August 1798, a French expedition of 1,000 men under the command of General Humbert landed at Kilcummin, north of Killala. They were joined by 3000 Irish volunteers who had neither proper weapons or training. At first they were successful but luck turned against them on 8th September at Ballinamuck Co Longford. The French surrender was accepted, but some 2.000 Irish were massacred.

The figure on the monument is not General Humbert but Mother Ireland. Maud Gonne Mc Bride (friend of the poet W.B. Yeats) unveiled the monument as part of the centenary celebrations. The monument was moved to its current location on Humbert Street in 1987 where it was rededicated to the memory of Maude Gonne's son Sean Mc Bride who was a founding member of Amnesty International and who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1974.

The monument is very close to Beleek Castle Hotel and a short distance along the public woodland walk beside the River Mot. A very impressive structure reflecting the spire of the St Giles on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Well worth a visit.
