Arrived quite late circa 4pm, having travelled via Odeliet, Alcoutim & Mértola.
On arrival, we used the facilities & bought a few gizits. The customer advisor was, courteous, professional & very helpful. Having seen stone curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus) & little bustard (Tetrax tetrax) the previous day at Castro Miram, the target species was great bustard (Otis tarda). The staff pointed out exactly where we had the best chance of seeing them. As (Irish) luck would have it, a female great bustard flew right over us, as we walked out of the centre - caught us both by surprise!!
Other species seen there were, corn bunting (Emberiza calandra), meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis), stonechat (Saxicola rubicola), whinchat (Saxicola rubetra, lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) - they breed close to the centre - calandra lark (Melanocorypha calandra) & spanish sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis), to mention a few. It’s a great birding location. The small town of Castro Verde is quaint & typically Portuguese, and worth a visit, if time permits.
For interest, 142 species in less than a week, on a none birding specific holiday.
Whether your a birder or just someone interested in nature in general, then this should be on the radar for a visit.
