There are some ostentatious architectural features in the area. Many tourists visit this square to take instagram photographs.

It is worth a visit as it is within walking distance to the shopping street in Serrano.

Although still under renovation Puerta Del Alcala is still one of the most emblematic landmark features of this most beautiful of city's and although I've viewed it many times over the years it still impresses me.
Puerta Del Alcala was constructed under the reign of Charles III who also commissioned this gateway ,it was built from designs from architect Francesco Sabatini,it was at the time the first post Roman Empire triumphal arch built in Europe ,a wonderful Neo Classical piece of architecture that was completed in 1778 ,it's located on a busy roundabout but is still easily viewed and very photogenic and most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Plaza De La Independencia,

Columbus (or Colon or Colom) is an historical figure with a past; not all of it favorable but at least notable for its accomplishments, even at the price that others paid. But here we are, at the foot of the monument and it is a column with stories only rivaled by the bible (so to speak). Every level tells an episode in the saga of this man's life.

To begin with, it does stand 197 feet tall (maybe because of all the episodes needing to be carved into the story) and was constructed in 1888 for the Exposition. The man himself stand at the top, all 24 feet of his persona, pointing (ahem, an error) not to the new world but to Constantine, Algeria. Ooops.

On every level of this vertical story, griffins, victories (the winged ones), medallions, and bits and pieces of his career and life are assembled. People related to Columbus are listed, also a bit on his son and himself asking for food at a monastery, and lots more. His was not an easy mission and the gift to sail was hard won.

There is a claustrophobic internal elevator (holds maybe 4 people) but why bother? Views are just s good from close by big buildings or from the cruise ship.

Interesting old piece sculpted with a story in each of its medallions, bas-relief panels, and all the accoutrements telling a detailed story.

This is one of the squares in Castellana Avenue. It is a really busy area in the city with many skyscrapers and historical buildings. The only nice thing is the statue in the middle dedicated to the Spanish politician.

Monumento a Don Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta is located in Plaza de Colon which has quite a bit of historical interest. It has several points of interest in it, and several monuments like this one. The most interesting thing about this monument is the background of the man standing on top of the rock! He was a military personality who participated in a number of naval battles during which he suffered several life threatening wounds. He lost his left eye and leg, and suffered continuing immobility to his right arm for some time! He probably suffered other injuries too, all of which made him quite famous. It is amazing he managed to continue in his chosen career for such a long time, but he did become well known as a symbol of courage and bravery in Spanish history. This area is worth a visit, as it has such a wealth of history, and it is a lovely spot as well.

The statue is in the middle of a traffic island. One of many military statues, or perhaps this fellow was a politician. I can’t say that this is any nicer or less nice than countless others.

This sculpture in Plaza Colon stands in tribute to Jorge Juan y Santacilia, a Spanish mathematician, scientist, naval officer, and mariner. His main legacy was his contribution to the expansion of the Spanish Navy that would later fight in the American War of Independence and the Battle of Trafalgar, founding the Royal Astronomical Observatory of Madrid and participation in the French Geodesic Mission in the 18th century to measure the roundness of the Earth.

This sculpture features a ships anchor and a stylised globe in reference to this contribution mentioned above. Not a must see if in Madrid, but it is located in Plaza Colon along with the Monuments to Blas de Lezo, the Discovery of America and to Christopher Columbus, so it's only a small detour.

This monument to the great Goya is one of several in Madrid. It is located on a corner where several streets intersect, and on a very busy spot. It is very difficult to get too close to have a look. You can only see it properly from a distance, from across the road. It is really only a giant bust of Goya, just the head. It is quite impressive, although hard to see all the facial features from afar. Worth a stop if you are passing by the area.
