- olivettiunderwood48 contributionsWe were in the 3 Frontiers district, Luxembourg to be exact, and wanted to purchase some wine. Liquor, tobacco and gas is cheaper there due to lower taxes. However, it had all the appearances of a tourist trap. A local win producer asked 8 Euros per person for 1 glass of wine and a 45 minute walk around their bottling and cask storage facility. We didn't need or want that, so we crosse the river into Germany.
There we happened across Karl Petgen Weingut cellars. We knocked on the door and were greeted by Pieter, a direct descendant of the winemaker founder Karl (back in 1720). He couldn't have been more welcoming. He took us to the tasting room immediately. We could have a tase of any of his company's extensive lineup at no cost. We sampled a few, bought several bottles and left very happy. Pieter was charming and informative but not overbearing in the least.

Not speaking German I had no idea what it meant! The class selection was amazing. I have taken several classes and all have been a great experience. Kai Mehler is a very talented chef and engaging instructor - and is now my "Crazy German Friend". Most of the attendees are locals and many are repeat customers - many have been coming for several years. The prices are actually pretty low! It is taught in German although most of the folks spoke English and were very friendly and helpful. And of course you get to eat a fabulous multi course dinner at the end.
