Was on a walk over the hill, stopped here to walk in the gardens and see the animals and was time well spent

The Botanical Garden is beautifully landscaped with creative steel sculptures and magnificently laid out flower beds. The greenhouses are full of interesting tropical plants and volunteers more than willing to explain them to you. A miniature lake with turtles and fish is very relaxing and there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy nature.

€5.00 per adult. i believe children are free under 3. i think kids above 3 are 3.50.
all in all we had a nice time. animal feed can be purchased from the park.
there was hot food available. we took a picnic and sat at tables provided in another area. our child just under 2 enjoyed the animals. i think the price was a little steep but the grounds were very clean. as were the toilets. we would probably go again if in the area.

We have been coming up to the reservoir, the Sengbachtalsperre for a number of years now. Typically we head here on a sunny Sunday afternoon to grab some fresh air, walk the dog and generally get some gentle exercise. We normally find somewhere to park in the little hamlet of Höhrath. We then either walk down the Thomasweg and follow the path around the whole reservoir in a clockwise fashion which takes quite a few hours eventually leading over the huge "gravity dam" at the north end or follow the road north until you come to the Haarmanweg and follow the banks of the reservoir but from very high up. This route is considerably shorter for those who want to get back for an afternoon coffee in the restaurant in Höhrath.

Last Sunday we noticed that the reservoir seemed to be quite empty which was a surprise as it supplies drinking water to a huge catchment area in this part of North Rhein Westphalia. I was also surprised by the constant, dull background noise of the A1 motorway to the south and east. But the gentle walk through the woods is still pleasant after the hub hub of urban life.
