BUT the absolute gem of the day is where the river re-emerges from the rocks underneath two restored mills, the walk there and back takes about 45minutes each way from the car park part way up the gorge (north side).
We had food to make sandwiches etc with us and there are a few spots you can park at the bottom and we had a picnic.

The walk down to the caves from the car park is lovely, along a gravel track that winds around the hillside, and when you get there, the wooden deck soars out over the gorge under thoughtfully placed awnings to pr...
There is access for handicapped visitors by travelling a little further down the road beyond the car park.

This limestone cave with its stunning giant stalactites and stalagmites, translucent draperies, calcite flows and folds is a marvel of nature and is a definite must-see for anyone interested in life.

Once away from the car park it is very child friendly .

Put on your walking shoes, take some food, drinks and extra clothes with you, and be amazed by this absolutely stunning piece of nature.
In the peak season these remarks may well have been very different as even on an October weekday the top car park was virtually full.

... things water can actually create. Before the actual visit of the cave (always with a guide) you watch a short film about the formation of the stalactites, stalagmites and other wonders of nature, very informative.
There is also a free courtesy bus between 10am and 11pm (reduced hours outside July and August), which leaves every 30 mins from the car parks at the Grand Site, near the Pont de Diable (Devil´s Bridge), stopping...
Gorges de Galamus Pyrenees-Orientales, France

The chapel in the Ermitage is reviewed elsewhere and is a delight but from the gorge car park you have a superb view of Canigou on a clear day and the rock formations all around make it a fabulous place to visit.
The marshals are friendly and helpful and multilingual and once you drive through there are car parks (also free) where you can park and walk back and down the gorges to visit the cathedral.
Jardins de la Fontaine Nimes, France
#11 of 256 Nature & Parks in Languedoc-Roussillon
Based in an old Roman design ( the park still contains the ruins of a Roman temple and tower) but reconstructed in a fabulous way with great style and a lot of uphill walking.
Here, apart from the fountains and the park, the remains of the Roman temple of Diana and the Roman tower are the most interesting.

Our landscape architect friends were thrilled as this park has fantastic bamboo, pond-lily-water-garden area, and a huge Cornus controversa (don't see them a lot in North America).
Apart from bamboo there is quiet a good collection of oaks, red woods and other trees that will certainly intrest the specialist but for a mere lay person it is a very agreeable "walk in the park" Certainly worth...

Even close to the car park (which is free out of season) there are lovely rock pools that you can swim in and even when there are lots of tourists you can find a spot to suit.

Easy to drive & park (6 Euro fee), quite a long walk through the dunes & beach to the sea, but once you make it, what a gem.
There is a car park which costs €6 for the day and then it's a short walk through the dunes to the golden sand.
