What travellers are saying
- beezigWiltshire, UK32 contributionsAbsolutely magical trip to Salisbury Cathedral to undertake the Tower tour. Our guide Caroline was so good, friendly, knowledgeable and really let the tour breath, so we could spak in a lot of information and wonder. You think you have seen everything then, on here's another staircase to climb, but once you are at the top inside the tower, you step out and the views are just breathtaking. A must do if you are planning on visiting, it makes you appreciate the hundreds of years of different engineering practices, fabulous day out. Also read the graffiti!!Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Meri PPoughkeepsie, NY21 contributionsGreat experience but it’s a 2 hour bus ride. 2 hours each way & 2 hours at the Stones. Don’t bother with the Fish & Chips meal because you don’t get it until you return to London. It was great to see the stones - despite the cold rainy weather. Our bus driver (there was no guide) was wonderful- Tyrone (5 stars for him). He was kind & friendly & had a great sense of humor. And, he was an excellent driver!Written 29 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Laura MPoole, UK9 contributionsLovely few hours here! Such a cool informative place, extremely knowledgeable and happy staff, would be great for kids as they can touch and go in some planes. Couldn't recommend enough!Written 5 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- AudiboyA1West Sussex, UK117 contributionsArundells is a really special house, and, whatever your political persuasion, it will hold plenty of interest as the home of former Prime Minister, Edward Heath. The house is preserved as far as possible as it was when occupied by Mr Heath and there are many of his personal artifacts on display.
This is history you can really connect with as it's relatively recent and the curator/staff have struck the perfect balance between conservation and keeping the house as it was in its "working days". The garden is also delightful and visitors have full access down to the river.
What also makes this a must visit venue are the staff who are knowledgeable and have an infectious enthusiasm for the house and its history, I learnt so much. You are made to feel like a genuine house guest rather than a mere visitor. Be warned though, one visit might not be enough! - this is a truly exceptional experience. Thank you to everyone, especially the volunteers.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The museum itself is a Grade I listed building visited by King James in the 17th century.
It is not so busy at the moment due to renovations and some exhibits are closed. That said what remains is very interesting and at the bargain price of £4.50 entrance fee (once renovations are completed scheduled for end of May 2024, the price reverts to £9) and still a bargain.
The highlight was the archeological exhibits which includes skeletons several centuries old including the Amesbury Archer.
This is a great place to spend a couple of hours.Written 29 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The site is easily accessible and with ample car parking. It is free for English heritage members or £3 for non members however the machine was broken during my visit.
There is a small portakabin type ticket kiosk and shop on site.
It is only a small site to walk around with the ruins of the fort/cathedral remaining with various information boards dotted around.
I found it disappointing that even though this is a historic site, people seem to use it more as a place to take their dogs and let them run free off the lead. With that, there was dog excrement all over the site - which when you have young children stepping in it is very annoying.Written 13 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Paula was super knowledgeable and friendly and we learnt so much. We have been on many wine tours and tastings and can easily say this has been our favourite. The portions for tasting were generous and the length of time of the tour was perfect. Would definitely return and 100% recommend.Written 9 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Stephen R2 contributionsI lived in the Cathedral Close from aged 7 until 21. My father worked in the Registry Office at 16 years old and stayed employed until his retirement ( he was in the RAF during WW 2 ). Visitors have commented on Ted Heath living in the Close, perhaps they didn't realise the Leslie Thomas the author (Virgin Soldiers) also lived here.Written 6 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MarcusHurleyCalne, UK9 564 contributionsWe visited here on Mother’s Day as somewhere small and easily walkable. The house is easy to find and the Cathedral Close is beautiful itself.
We had a lovely greeting on entering Mompesson and although there were only 7 rooms available to view it was an unexpectedly interesting visit. The glassware was particularly fascinating - and I never thought I’d say that! - helped by explanations from the volunteer.
Upstairs was more limited with the rooms roped off but the gardens outside were pretty, even in March. A great second hand bookshop too!Written 11 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Church is home to one of the Doom paintings from medieval times and also has beautiful stained-glass windows. My favorite part is to the right side, which may be the original part of the church, with its depictions of some of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.Written 20 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jpdwilliBox, UK122 contributionsA great theatre, not too big and all the seats seem to have a good view of the stage. There didn't seem to be queues for the bar or for the ladies. They offer cheaper seats for the areas that are not as popular but even these give an uninterrupted view of the stage.Written 30 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Andy EChelmsford, UK50 contributionsAmazing little military museum next to the cathedral. Staffed by passionate and knowledgeable guides . Biographies of members of regiment was very poignant.
