You can catch your breath from the uphill climb in the peaceful churchyard, the city view from the top terrace is stunning.
This Saxon church with many later additions is built on the site of a Roman temple to Siluris (the spring still wells up and floods the church occasionally), and may have been a Celtic shrine before the Romans.

From the well-kept lawns one can view the Marlowe theatre and the cathedral, yet they may as well be miles away, as it is an idyllic place to relax.
Both myself and my partner walked away from this small historic site feeling enlightened about the ways of the world at time of Christian pilgrimages & those trying to fast track their way to heaven !

This historic site is small, but for anyone interested in the history it should absolutely be a must visit.
£3 for the whole site, with an explanatory leaflet.

There is a modern visitors centre that complements the historical site, the audio guide gives you the full story of the Abbey and it’s well worth visiting before going across to Canterbury Cathedral .
Well looked after by English Heritage and hosted by charming and enthusiastic staff, St Augustine's is one of the trio of churches that comprise the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Just slightly off the well trodden tourist route to the main Canterbury attraction, The Big Church, this quieter street affords a great view of the afore mention site - worth a stop for a snap.

The woodland area is really nice with little boards giving info about various trees with some wood sculptures dotted around...we had a pushchair which we manoeuvred easily round the whole site.
I can only imagine the negative reviews are from an adult point of view but all in all kids will love it!
