If you are in Sabbioneta you should go and see the old theatre. We were unable to go inside, but the architecture is very interesting.

Sabbioneta is a small town built as an ideal Renaissance city in the 16th Century, now rediscovered as a UNESCO site: among its features, after driving through the surrounding original fortress walls, is the Antique Gallery - 3rd longest room in Italy. In it's day, the Duke Vespasiano Gonzaga filled the long hall with archeological treasures.
Sold off after his reign (which left no heir), the Gallery remains with its decorate frescoes that adorn not only the long hall, but several other rooms both large and small - some of the most amazing paintings of the 16th Century.

To get to the Dukes Antiquities Gallery, you must past throw the Garden Palazzo but it would be a destination unto itself: The main space has sublime frescoes on all of the walls; one painting includes a Hebrew passage noting the unique community of Jews in the 16th Century....smaller chambers all frescoed in vines and Pompeiian like themes....

I did not find the church open but like many old churches in Italy, a small side chapel for all day worship was open. The chapel was filled with lovely artwork. A must see!

Sabbioneta is an interesting little town with Renaissance architecture. If you are in the area it’s worth the stop, but don’t go out of your way. The piazza ducal is nice and very large lined with shops.

Amazing trip with our daughters through Sabbioneta, that is a hidden gem in Pianura Padana. The visit was particularly interesting as we had the luck to being guided by Raffaele, who is very fond of being a guide by giving you historical, social and cultural insights on every visited place. He also added a theatre piece played by himself (he’s a theatre actor as well, who worked for Pasolini, among others).
Incredible, and our daughters loved it

Interesting relic of the former Jewish community, who settled here to lend money when such practices were forbidden by the Christian church. The synagogue itself is relatively modern (18th century?), but there is lots of information on the community which is worth the long climb upstairs.

This one of the two gates into Sabionetta and was built in the middle of the 16th century as part of the mediaeval defences. It is quite plain in appearance, but its size is impressive. Unusually, there is an altar set in a niche within the gatehouse structure.
