What travellers are saying
- NC0114Sheffield, UK67 contributionsDon’t make the same mistake as we did by walking just a bit too far on the Sliding Sands trail, as it’s hard work climbing back up in the soft volcanic soil. We ended up having to rush back up, or else we’d have might’ve missed the sunset! Quite a workout, as it turned out.
The sunset’s great, of course, and you’ll need to layer-up against the cold - we decided to stick around afterwards and do some stargazing.
The road up & down’s actually not that bad to drive; the altitude actually caused a bag of crisps to expand & explode all over the backseat of our car!Written 21 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Jennifer WPuyallup, WA69 contributionsWe did many really amazing things during our stay in Maui but this was one of my personal favorites. Walking through a bamboo forest just isn't something you get to do very often. I loved the sound of the trade winds blowing through the bamboo. Magical!Written 24 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- NC0114Sheffield, UK67 contributionsAwesome moonscape; very photogenic, but it’s hard work hiking back up, so do allow for this additional time when planning your time here.Written 21 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- rickh57Portland, OR361 contributionsLooking down at the series of pools in the gulch from the trail along the edge was interesting -- the green of the jungle foliage contrasting with the water.Written 17 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- WPLandryFairfax, VA509 contributionsThis was a lovely trail that was quite different from other parts of the park. I would definitely recommend a hike through here if you have the time.Written 11 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Marc NBartlesville, OK498 contributionsOutstanding view. Tour included transport, sunrise viewing and breakfast after. Left the hotel at 2:30am. Arrived at Haleakala at 4:30a.m.- 2 hrs before sunrise. Guide instructed where to stand for best viewing. Note it is really cold so dress appropriately.Written 13 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- WPLandryFairfax, VA509 contributionsNot an easy hike but not technical and requires no specialized gear. The terrain is varied so proper shoes is a must. The views are incredible and totally worth the trek. It is high altitude so take the proper time to allow your body to acclimate a bit. Do not try to rush your experience. Take is slow and enjoy every moment.Written 4 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Melisa SRaleigh, NC64 contributionsMy husband and I booked this tour as we planned our wedding and made our plans to honeymoon in Maui. He is a pro at the ATV, I was not. This was back in January 2004. I can't remember what we paid but I am sure it was a significant amount. I will say, they do give you training before you ride and warn you about the terrain, etc. I was nervous but the scenery was breathtaking. We even had a point where we were in the clouds and the ATV in front of you just disappears...that scared me the most but was very neat to experience. They did give us a small lunch and let us walk around the forest. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly. I'd do it again.Written 23 February 2013This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
