Ok, the bikes are past their best, but mine rode fine. I arrived just before the gates opened. Even though it was Easter Sunday, there were only a few other cars entering at that time and it was obviously the coolest part of the day. I booked a bike in advance, which might not be necessary if you go that early, but certainly is if you go later - by the time I returned at 11:30, there was a waiting list for bikes and people just had to wait for bikes to be returned before setting off.

I went really slowly for the first half, because there was just so much to see! I was stopping every 30 seconds or so. A lot of people were flying past me and would have missed a lot. I don't really see the point of doing the bike ride if you go fast. May as well not get hot and sweaty and do the tram instead. At the observation tower I turned around and went back the same way, as I heard that there was less wildlife on the second half of the loop. On the return leg I pretty much zoomed back in about 40 mins as I had seen so much on the first leg and it was getting very hot. I did still stop a few times and saw some new things. I saw so many people just starting off at the hottest time of the day and it seemed a bit crazy - plan better!

I liked the bike option because I could take things at my own pace, which allowed me to stop often, but I was also able to go all the way to the observation tower and back within 3 hours. I'm glad I did as I saw different things the further along I went, although for those with less time/physical ability, even going 2 miles out and back would still be worthwhile. Definitely do-able on foot, but it would be a long day in the sun to go all the way to the tower and back.

I went on a 1.5 hour airboat tour after, which was super fun and interesting, but I saw many more gators and birds at Shark Valley. It was a great combination to do for a daytrip.

Wow! What an experience! I learned so much from enthusiastic and informative Ranger Olivia (she was a FABULOUS guide!) during our walk through the water. It was so different to see the flora and fauna while standing in the wetlands. The highlight was observing the alligator hole (sans the alligator) and then actually seeing an alligator in a different area on our way out of the wetlands.

I've always wanted to paddles in the Everglades and Dave K. made it possible. The opportunity to see untouched Florida by kayak is an unparalleled experience. We paddled through big water, mangrove caves and even the Gulf of Mexico. Dave made the trip a breeze (excellent cooked meals and lots of hot coffee!!). While primitive camping may not be for everyone, it's the only way to do this trip right. Don't overpack: really, you CAN fit everything in a 5 liter drybag. I would recommend doing some core work before hand and investing in good paddling gloves, camp pants and both spray on and insect repellent wipes. The bugs were pretty aggressive, the gators, not so much. I enjoyed both the solitude and the easy camaraderie with the other guests.

In short, this is a trip very much worth doing. But listen to Dave's instructions and do some Googling so you know exactly where you are going and boned up a bit on the flora, fauna and local history. It will enhance your experience.

My 14 yo son and I decided that dad needed to go bass fishing. I spent an enormous amount of time online trying to find the right business that I could trust. When I came across Captain Dave, read the reviews, called the office, I knew I found a winner. The gentleman that took my call was patient with my dozens of questions and full of great info. When I connected with Captain Dave he too was patient, very helpful and quite professional. He and I exchanged a few emails to establish all the details. As this was a Father's Day present Captain Dave even made a gift certificate for me! And now the fishing trip -my husband and son had a GREAT time. They spent four hours on the water, saw lots of wildlife and caught many fish. They had a great time with Captain Dave; they loved his sense of humor and expert knowledge. When they came home they were talking about booking another trip with Dave!
