Friday 15th October and our exploration of La Gomera continued with a visit to Playa Santiago on the south coast of the Island.

We walked along the seafront towards the Port area where this small Church is situated.

From the outside it looks like a small ordinary Church, however once inside the door visitors can see how the Church has been built into the rock of the cliff.

Everything about the Church is simple and basic which gives it such an amazing charm and character.

There is nothing elaborate or overly ornate here, plain wooden furnishings and rustic carvings and paintings adorn the walls.

A statue of Mary stands on a small altar, made of black volcanic stone, inset into the rock.

Due to it’s proximity to the sea there was evidence of an affiliation between the Church and local Fishermen with a number of nautical items on display.

Friday 15th October we visited Playa de Santiago and it's  beach which lies on the south coast of the island.

The beach sits in a picturesque bay flanked by Punta Marichal at one end and the small Port at the other and surrounded by mountainous terrain. A promenade runs the length of the beach, roughly one kilometre.

The beach is in two parts, separated by a concrete groyne with a small wooden pier on top of it.

It is predominately a wide pebbled stoney beach with patches of black volcanic sands. There are static umbrellas dotted around the beach and there is also showers.

Lots of space to spread out the beach mats and towels and relax. There are a number of supermarkets and shops nearby, to pick up all the supplies required for a day here.

Friday 15th October we were visiting Playa de Santiago on the south coast of the Island. While we were here we took the opportunity to walk along this pedestrianised street which runs along the top of the Beach.

It is a walk of roughly about one kilometre, a twenty minute slow amble on a flat surface.

The stoney beach is in two parts, separated by a concrete groyne with a small wooden pier on top of it, which is possible to walk along.

The are a mixture of buildings along the Avenue with a variety of uses, commercial and residential. There are a number of bars and restaurants, a few supermarkets, tourist office, Municipal Offices.

Along the way there is an open Square area, a stage had been erected to host a recent fevent to raise funds for the people of Las Palmas enduring the ravages of an erupting volcano.

We walked to the end to the Port area of the Town where the delightful Church, Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen is located.

Popped in here whilst staying at the Jardin Tecina and whilst not the greatest amount of stock some unusual pieces and locally produced. The wife bought a couple of pieces for us for home.
Pleasant lady who served us I assume was the owner.
