Worth the side trip
Sep 2019
If you are visiting Mont St. Michel, Pontorson is worth the stop to see Notre Dame de la Paix built in the same period as St. Michel and still actively serving as a parish church. We attended mass there and it was lovely.

Historical church not to be missed
Jun 2018 • Couples
When exploring Pontorson, one should take the time to stop and visit this church. The church is about 1,000 years old and is said to have been founded by William the Conqueror, to thank the Virgin Mary for getting his army across the Couesnon River quicksand. Having been built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it has both Romanesque and Gothic features and is said to have been built by the same people who built the Abbey at Mont St-Michel.

There are beautiful stained glass windows and a depiction of Christ's life that saw all of the figures decapitated during religious conflict.

Interesting

This church was built by the same architect as the abbey on St Mont Michel. The most interesting aspect is the wall sculpture of the life of Christ. Every figure was decapitated during the religious wars. It really is a monument of survival.

Pay a visit on the way to Mont Saint Michel.

Notre Dame de la Paix de Montorson is a Catholic church mocated at Pontorson on the way to Mont Saint Michel. The companions who build the Mont St Michel, build this church needed bt Guillaume the Conqueror to thank the Virgin for saving his army of the shifting sands of the river Couesnon.

ENTRÉE TO ABBEY MONT SAINT-MICHEL
Apr 2016 • Couples
Easily overlooked for those passing through Pontorson on their way to Abbey Mont Saint-Michel, it is worth taking a little time to stop and see this church. Think of it as entrée to the Abbey, as both structures were supposedly built by the same builders. This charming little church obviously isn’t as imposing or grand as Abbey Mont Saint-Michel, however, at 1,000 years old, it is still impressive. It is said Eglise Notre Dame de Pontorson/Notre Dame de la Paix de Pontorson was founded by William the Conqueror, as thanks to the Virgin Mary for getting his army across the Couesnon quicksand. Built 11th and 12th centuries, with a little bit of 15th century thrown in as well, it is considered Romanesque and Gothic. We didn’t see it but apparently there is a bird and man etched into the tympanum, on the southern entrance door. This image is considered a bit of a mystery, as no-one knows what it means.

The church has been classified as an historical monument since 1889.
