A value for money tour only 45 minutes up the West Coast of Cape Town, where we visit a private game reserve, see 4 of the big 5 (everything except elephant) explore the historic town of Darling, sample craft beer, artisan cheeses, award winning wines and have lunch at the Iconic “Evita se Peron”. As if that is not enough, we also visit the Kwha Ittu Khoi San cultural village for an in depth look at the life of the Bushman, then and now. We end the day off at the “Blue Peter” on Blouberg beach with breath taking views of Table bay and Table Mountain.

We arrived 5 mins before closing but the owner didn't rush us. We were made to feel welcome and were able to complete our purchases without rushing. Very wide selection of wines , whiskys, gins etc at good prices. Will be back (and at an earlier time) and hopefully there will be some tastings. If you have young children, I would suggest keeping them out of the shop to prevent accidents.

We walked in with no idea what experience we were about to have. We were immediately given some wine for tasting and once Charles the owner showed up the tasting just got better. He advised on some great wines whilst we enjoyed several gins and brandies as well. Even ordered a case just there. Great place and pricing is fair. Charles and his staff makes a real difference.

Dear Stefan and Andrea, Thank you for your kind note. It was an absolute joy hosting you both - you are just those type of people who bring out the best in other people ! It is always great fun putting together a case of wine for customers who want to "explore" and imagining you enjoying these wines in your own home town, over 1 500 kilometers away. Let's hope each and every one brings back a happy memory. I do have one request though, if you manage to find the time, and that is to send a note on which wines really hit the spot for you. Hopefully we cracked the jackpot, or got pretty close. With very best wishes from Darling . Charles, Lizette and Ida in absentia !

Thank you for coming to visit us at the Darling Wine Shop and your positive feedback. Your comments about tasting are very valid .. and have provided another prod to us to think of options. One of the challenges we face in winter and footfall is small is opening tasting wines an never even going through half a bottle and then having to discard the rest. So maybe it is an idea to open a single wine as a "wine of the day" and at least you can have a complimentary "Taste of Darling" while you are here. Happy travels .. Charles Withington

It is wonderful to visit all the local wine estates but this little gem on the quiet end of the main road is the ''one stop wine shop''. Charles the owner and his right hand lady Ida keep the discerning locals and visitors to Darling well stocked with excellent wines at exceptional prices. If you are looking for something special they will fine it for you in their cellar. If you want some good fair priced every day drinking wine , they have it for you. An absolute gem.

Dear David....I must apologise for not even acknowledging your kind note - cannot think how is missed it, but I did. Thank you for the positive comment which is sincerely appreciated. I have often said to people I am blessed in general to have "interesting and interested" customers, and this is what makes the difference. Dealing with PLY (People Like You) is always a pleasure and while I still think that people like me who have opted for a 7 day a week retail business, need a lobotomy, I do not think we ever have a day without saying to ourselves "now, those were nice people" Best wishes Charles Withington

My husband and I stopped over in Darling enroute to Paternoster on a Saturday afternoon. After sampling and then purchasing some of the most delectable cheeses and spreads at the Udderly Delicious with the guidance of a passionate cheese crafter who took no short cuts in our taste experience, we were blessed by the chance appearance of Charles Withington from the Darling Wine shop (next door). The shop was closed and Charles had popped in to fetch something. Ofcourse in what we quickly discovered to be true Darling tradition he welcomed us and offered assistance in selecting wine. We quickly got chatting about Indian food, Charles love for dhal and our culinary skills. He went on to entertain us with his stories about his travels to India. It was an absolute privilege to be treated with such warmth in a town that we were visiting for the first time. The epic moment for me was Charles spontaneous offer for us to demonstrate our culinary skills at a wine tasting event that he could host in Darling. Now that is an offer that left us overjoyed and inspired.Thank you Charles for your time, passion and generosity. You are a model for all in the tourism sector. We are looking foward to returning to Darling with spices and the many varieties of Dhal. A most memorable experience and the start of something new....I especialy appreciate the bottle of wine that you generously gave me. I will certainly savour it with the memories of the town called Darling. Rohini
