the ancient city of Susa, is one of Iran's most historically rich and culturally significant sites. Located in the Khuzestan province, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers an extraordinary journey through thousands of years of history, from the early Elamite civilization to the height of the Persian Empire and beyond. For history enthusiasts, archaeologists, and anyone interested in the ancient world, the site of Shush is a captivating destination.

Shush was once the capital of the Elamite Empire and later served as a major city within the Achaemenid Empire under rulers like Darius the Great. The site spans several eras, making it a living museum of different cultures, architectural styles, and historical events. As you walk through the ruins, you can explore remnants of grand palaces, ziggurats, and other structures that tell the story of a city that was a crossroads of civilizations.

One of the most significant structures at the site is the Apadana Palace, originally built by Darius I as a royal residence. Although much of the palace is now in ruins, the massive columns and intricate reliefs that remain hint at the grandeur and significance of this ancient complex. The nearby Acropolis, which served as a fortified area, offers a commanding view of the surrounding plains and the ancient city.

The Tomb of Daniel, a revered biblical prophet, is another key feature of the site. This sacred site attracts pilgrims and visitors alike, adding a spiritual dimension to the historical exploration. The juxtaposition of religious significance with ancient ruins adds to the layered and multifaceted experience of visiting Shush.

Visitors will find the site accessible, with informative signs and a small museum that provides context for the artifacts and ruins on display. However, given the vastness of the site, it is recommended to allocate several hours for exploration to fully appreciate its historical depth.

The only part of the city which is visible is the deep trench excavated by Grishman which exposed the earliest level of the city. The museum in the castle on the site is very good.

My knowledge of the history of this city gave me much to be excited about...but there is little left...and the museum is very small an unexciting. Nevertheless .. you have to go to Zanbil nearby ...so worth stopping in..for ancient history buffs

This is part of the packaged experience with the french castle and the apadana palace ruins. This is the best of the bunch. We were shown a kitchy movie to give us an overview followed by the museum and a souveneir shop. Good if you want to tick Shush off your list.

There is not much to see at the archaeological site. Some pieces of columns. That's it. Not comparable with Persepolis which is quite impressive.
The museum has some nice artefacts in display, but all behind glass, making photography difficult. It's ridiculous that almost double the price of Persepolis is charged.

It is said that in 1885, along with the presence of foreign diggers and explorers, a workshop for the restoration of historical objects was also commissioned in the fort, which was used in drilling seasons, after the victory of the Islamic Revolution and the withdrawal of the French, the workshop was restored during drilling by domestic researchers. It was used intermittently, but it was shut down over the past few years due to the lack of modern equipment and the downsizing of research activities. Starting from 2013, with the start of the whispers of the Universal Register of Susa, due to the importance of the issue, in addition to launching a workshop for the conservation and restoration of historical objects, modern equipment was constructed and put into operation. Accordingly, researchers and students from all over the country use the facilities.
