Lovely trail with an interesting mix of scenery and spectacular views. Nothing hectic but a fun ride on a sweet horse who definitely knows how to look after you. Really happy place with happy fur kids.

Looking for something active to do over the Easter weekend, I decided to embark on some horse riding and headed for Tulbagh. I contacted Horse About Trails the day before and Received a response really quickly from Jo.
Their trail rides consist of a scenic ride which is only walking and then another ride which includes some cantering. Whilst I can ride, I'm a nervous rider and wasn't too keen to canter but did want to trot.
I explained this to Jo and she suggested a private ride which I happily booked.
I done many outrides all over the Western Cape over the past 17 years and I can honestly say this was one of the best rides I've ever been on.
John very quickly assessed my skills (or lack thereof) and not once did he push me out of my comfort zone. John's knowledge about the surrounding area is astounding and I learned some really interesting facts about the vegetation and I left there having gained not only a horseback ride but a wealth of information and tips on riding in general.
The trail itself was just wonderful. There was no rushing through it and my horse was completely controllable at all times - none of the usual "school horse" habits where they blindly follow the same path and refuse to go in any other direction. It took me a few minutes to get the feel of riding and calm my nerves but once we got going, there was never a time where I felt nervous or the possibility that the horse was going to take off with me. The horses are all in amazing condition which was great to see. I was quite sorry that I had not brought my 2 young daughters who have some riding ability and I will definitely be going back with the family and to do some cantering this time. Booking is essential.

Dear Leighshe, it was such a pleasure meeting you and so glad you enjoyed the ride. The private ride does indeed offer the flexibility to match the trail to the guest. It is always fantastic to see guests back again, so we look forward to your return with your daughters soon! Your kind and detailed review is much appreciated. Warm regards John and Jo

I am an equestrian professional, so my review should be read with the following in mind -these are very, very good horse people!
My communication with Jo prior to coming had been easy and friendly and I felt like I knew her before meeting her.
The drive from Cape Town was very easy and beautiful and we were there in just over 2 hours.
We drove into the magnificent scenery of the Tulbagh Winelands to find a small group of horses grazing peacefully -the best sight to a horse lover :-)
Jo's husband, John, was our first guide on the trails and a wonderful one -he never kept his eyes off us and especially off my daughter who at 11, is really tiny. Once he ascertained that we, indeed, knew what we were doing, he relaxed and we had a nice, active ride.
We were there for 3 days and loved it!!! The scenery is really quite astounding, the horses are good, calm, and they know their job :-) The trails were beautiful and different each time.
Jo and John were wonderful guides and their passion and attention to detail shows in the trails they have carved out of the thick forest below the mountains, in the various picnic and romantic spots they have set up with stunning views and, of course, in their care of their horses and their paramount attention to safety, making sure that horses are well suited to the riding experience of the riders. Indeed, my mum who is now 70 years old and had not ridden for years, found that she felt confident enough to accompany us on one of our rides :-))))
A wonderful holiday, I strongly recommend it! I wish I could go back, but I live so far!!!

Thank you Jo and John for an amazing experience.

Time stood still on a horse, as we were whisked away to a far away land where kids and adults are equals, limited only by our imagination. We found ourselves one with nature again. as we set off on an easy ride through the mountains, streams and wine estates to take in majestic views of the Witzenberg mountain range that was forced to bare it's secrets.

As a novice, riding a horse was incredibly easy and comfortable thanks to excellent tips from John. His passion for nature and riding really comes through, as he openly shared his wealth of information so we could better connect with our horses.

Your horses temperament and condition speaks volumes on how well they are taken care of. Watching you guys give a new life to rescued horses fills me with joy, and makes me believe again that there is great (not just good) in this world, it's up to me what to focus on :D

Looking forward to our next visit!

I spent a week riding with Jo & John from Horse About in February 2013 and LOVED every minute. The horses are extremely well cared for and well schooled - no naughty riding school ponies here. Jo & John are not only exceptionally knowlegeable about horses but are also relaxed and fun to be with. Godwin, who helps look after the horses, is friendly and helpful. The trails are really breathtakingly beautiful and are very varied so even if you're riding every day for a week you can go a different route every day. I particularly enjoyed the longer outrides (2 hours) and the moonlit ride. There's also the option to have lessons with John - he makes you work quite hard and push yourself; if you're keen on improving your riding skills then you couldn't do better. Experienced riders are given more 'free rein' whilst those who are new to riding, or who are nervous, are well looked after. The whole experience is such a treat and I can't wait to go back.

This was a great experience, John made us feel comfortable within minutes, even though we were novice riders The farm/estate is quite far from the main road which makes it very quiet in a beautiful scenery. Absolute great ride through the wine fields and around the farm, close to the beginning of sunset. Professionally run business with good heart for the horses.

It is funny how when you meet an animal you get to know them like people and how you actually have alot in common with them. That's what horse about trails us all about. Matching people to horses. My horse pedro was fat stubborn loved to eat and give people a gard to me. My husband horse alabama was regal feisty a real queen hehehe and my two girls had Bob and Sky. They were great. The trail was tranquil beautiful serene quiet our guide John was a real cowboy amazing....take the drive out it's worth it!

Nadia, your review made me chuckle.. it is always interesting to see how the different horses and guests respond to each other - and how differently the horses do respond to some guests. And how special is it when guests recognise each horse is an individual. Thank you for joining us and for taking the time to drop us a review. We hope that you will make the drive again soon and visit us. Winter time is awesome - with green fields and flowing streams. Warm regards from the Horse About Team

We had a wonderful 2h morning ride with John. The scenery was breathtaking and he was an interesting and knowledgeable guide. My partner is a novice rider and John got him feeling confident and comfortable. We were also lucky enough to see a Crowned Eagle enjoying a snack. Well trained and reliable horses - not just "follow in a row" ponies! Thanks for a great experience Jo and John.
