After the good rain our family stopped to take a look at the waterfall. Since we have three small children we were careful about the surroundings but was not scared. There is a walking trail on the outside if you do not want to take the dark tunnel. It was awesome to had stopped there after roughly 25 years.
A security guard would help as I can understand some people might be scared to stop in small groups. The site was very clean.

There were two lady police officers at the bridge who were extremely unfriendly and when asked where the falls were asked for a tip. You then walk through a dark tunnel for about 250m and finally come to the falls. Some of the barrier Poles are missing and there were a few undesirables hanging about giving us very strange looks. My husband says they were eying my camera bag and nudging each other while I took photos. Not a place to go if you are not in a big group.

Ok, some people might miss the main waterfall when you pass through the tunnel...I know, I know - the 400m Tunnel in this quiet quaint town is amazing, so I don't blame you.
But keep an eye out for another little parking spot further down....this is a little viewpoint of the Elands River and the old 5 arch bridge.
There is a pathway that takes you down to the water - but make sure that you are not doing this alone, parties of 5 and more are better, as there has been some crime in the area.
You can make your way down to either part of the river, there is a stream that joins the Elandsriver here. The area is kept clean and tidy - and there are points that bring your right close to the rivers in order to take some pictures.
So if you miss the main falls, you can always catch the river that it falls into lower down.

Not many people know about the waterfall. It is one of South Africa most beautiful sites
as far as waterfalls go. It is in the Elandsriver and is hidden around the corner from the tunnel
on the N4 5km outside Waterval Boven. Guess this is where the town got it's name from.
To get to the waterfall you need to walk about 500m next to the mountain, and the path way
is very rough but you do not need to be a mountaineer.
At the same spot is also a historic train tunnel dating from the late 1800's with special track in the
middle in order for the locomotive to pull the train up the mountain.
Visitors must just note that there is very little security in the area. If there is police guards then it should
be safe but you need to be very alert as the spot is out of the eye. Hope the local municipality would
attend to the security at this spot.

The waterfall is lovely but it involves a rather long walk through a very dark tunnel. Take a flashlight!

Today we stopped to view the Elands River Falls or now called the Emgwenya Falls. Being a very fearful person, my thrill for adventure took over this time and we took the leap of faith with my 5 year old son.
The tunnel was a short walk but terrifying. A torch is a must have. And be vigilant all the way as we were. The Falls were a sight to behold and we only wish we could have enjoyed the beauty for longer and perhaps even explore to the bottom but the fear of the area around us did not allow for this.
There is no change in terms of maintenance/renovation of the area or the viewing deck, however, it is neat and clean.

Couldn't get to the waterfall - dodgy surroundings and dark tunnel to walk through. Please make it more accessible, maybe with security and paypoint??!

Beautiful views, place looks very unsafe with too many doggy characters milling around.

Visited the falls today & weren’t keen to walk through the old & very dark railway tunnel. We walked back through the road tunnel instead & took the footpath back towards the railway tunnel to find the turning to the viewing platform. If you’re in the area worth the 15 min walk to see the falls but wouldn’t make a special trip to see it.

Great experience. as we went after the rains, the waterfall was overfilled with water and powerful. We have done abseiling down the waterfall and climbed back. Fantastic experience!
On the cautious side, the waterfall is positioned in the very rural area, hence it surrounding don't come across as the safest place in the world. So, take in into consideration when planning your trip.
