If you're looking for ancient history from about 1600-1700 years ago (300-400AD) then this is the place for you. The lighting wasn't great but the whole site was magnificent. It was an old Sassanian dynasty Zoroastrian religious site in the province of Khorasan. It was made of the king (Shah) and his princes. We went and the guy gave us a tour in Persian (Farsi). He said tourist groups come here and their translator translates everything he says. Not much Iranians come here because they don't know about it. I truly loved it. I read about this in the 2008 LP Iran book and asked around in TA's forums. I researched it and finally found out that the government made it into a museum. I LOVED it.

This place is truly stunning. It's a zoroastrian fire temple of the Sasanid period; what is amazing are the stucco decorations of the temple, which are very well preserved. The site is run by young MA's in Archeology: Ali and Mehsa gave me a tour in English, explained everything very well and were really kind. They also let me visit a burial site nearby which is still under excavation. It's definitely worth the trip (Dargaz is about 4 hours away of driving from Mashhad)

The Bandian fire temple is a Sassanid era sanctuary and temple where zoroastrians during the sassanids dynasty practiced their rituals there. It is now only some small parts of the plasterworks and base of the pillars which is worth visiting. If you are coming from merve you can choose to pass through Lotfabad Border and come to Dargaz city on the way and visit that.
