I walk up Mam Tor and the Ridge quite regularly, but today it was an early start to see the sunrise for New Year's Day. Despite being cloudy it was still a great expierence and felt great. Myself and my dog carried on for a walk which is always a great way to spend a few hours. The rest of the family (my grown up daughter and her husband. No oltion for this below) went back home. Being New Year the carpark was packed and the roads were lined with cars. A warning for anyone tempted to park on or next to yellow lines the traffic warden was out at 11am, on New Year's Day, writing many many tickets.

Well worth a visit! Amazing views, unfortunately we only made it to the first section as it was terribly windy the day we came and my husband wasn’t quite prepared for it!
Stunning views, moderate intensity (if you’re like me and used to flat!)
No toilet or refreshment facilities, however the village below has lots of nice cafes to visit afterwards.

Easy walk up from the NT car park to the summit of Mam Tor. Had the kids with me so didn't do the full ridge to Hope, departed under half way along, back down to meet the Old Mam Tor Road (A625, abandoned 1979 after landslips) to be picked up there. Enjoyable. Kids found the old abandoned road at least as fascinating as the ridge, as did I!

Recently my wife and I had a fantastic few days in the Mam Tor Kinder Scout area. However, for all those thinking of visiting Mam Tor, BE WARNED. It is in the High Peak local authority area and they have seen fit to interpret the HIGHWAY CODE in a manner no other authority has.
The parking area behind the double yellow lines adjacent to the entrance to the Mam Tor car park is a CASH COW for them. Vehicles are parked every day well off the road on the non road side of the yellow lines and each receives a PARKING TICKET from PARK SMARTER who are employed by HIGH PEAK. DO NOT PARK HERE!!!

They have just rejected my formal challenge, even though thousands of vehicles are parked daily in exactly the same manner. Look around as you drive and you will see many cars parked behind yellow lines where the Local Authority rightly does NOT issue parking tickets.

This is a beautiful area that is being spoilt by the greed of a local authority. The fine is £70 or £35 if paid within 14 days. With thousands of tickets being issues, this is devious way to gain money from tourists.

Starting at the National Trust car park at Hope Valley S33 7ZQ we walked up to Mam Tor. It’s a steep climb at the start which levels out up to the very top. There are steps and flag stones which are very easy to walk on. The view from the top is worth it. You can see Castleton which is a great place in the valley where you can go to lunch. The views are worth the climb. At the top of Mam Tor you can continue on the path along a wide ridge and get to another fantastic rock which has steps abs a scrabble across rocks to get to the top. It looks fantastic. I’ve included a picture to give you an idea. There were loads of dogs, families and seniors enjoying the walk. It has to be one of the top spots to visit in the Peak District.

Fantastic Views from the top and a great sense of achievement to reach it! From the nearest car park, it is actually a rather easy 20-minute walk to the top. We started from lower down at Treak Cliff and did a circular walk, going from Mam Tor to Barker Bank and then back down via Hollins Cross and Odin's mine. Took about 4 hours with young children, snack stops, photo stops, a stop to play in a stream, and a stop to explore the mine!

We walked from the footpath in the car park in Castleton (£6 - cash only). We followed the route up to Hollins Cross which was short but steep and then along the ridge to Mam Tor. We took the less steep route back down following the road back into Castleton. Despite it being hot and sunny when we left Castleton it was very windy and raining at the top so it is best to be prepared for all conditions. Great views from the top and throughout this lovely circular walk.

A really good walk which is definitely worth the effort. Easier than it looks. Car park is quite busy with limited street parking. Try to time it with good weather so that you can get the best of the views.
