The area that encompasses the National Park of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft is charming and best explored by bike. We unfortunately could not use bikes due to an injury but we gave up counting the hundreds/thousands of bicycles that passed us. Park your car in one of the many parking areas (€), hop across a dike or cross through the coastal forest and hit the beach. The waves are smaller and calmer than along the west coast of the US and if you expect spectacular sea stacks and dramatic coast lines, you’ll mostly be disappointed aside from a few distinct areas. But bring something to eat, plop down, put your toes in the sand, and enjoy swans that may bob in the water in the waves. The forests provide a nice contrast, shade, or relief from the wind. Beech, several oak species, and pine grow on the sandy soils across the generally flat landscape. I have to admit that I’m confused about the term National Park. Every place labeled this way in Germany holds some treasure but it is generally heavily dotted with agriculture, land management, towns, private land, roads, and a landscape that has been manipulated over hundreds and sometimes thousands of years by those who have inhabited it. In some ways we may need to think of it in such a way, more of a historically shaped landscape rather than what we perceive to be truly natural and untouched. In all honesty, that just doesn’t really exist anymore. Nevertheless, this area holds many opportunities for different experiences. Many great family businesses selling smoked fish - don’t leave without tasting these culinary treats of pickled Bismarck herrings and onions on crisp buns or a piece of smoked mackerel, halibut, etc. Anorher treasure are the reed covered roofs of the houses, a true icon of northern Germany that, along with brick stone construction, provides an added level of charme. What I enjoyed most, however, are taking the smallest of back roads, driving along narrow roads lined with perfectly spaced old trees for many miles, the cobblestone roads of small towns partin this part of former east Germany. Enjoy this special place.
