Our guide wanted us to go to a popular, very busy tourist attraction for lunch. No doubt he gets a kickback when he brings groups.

For our group I wanted a more genuine, quiet spot. We chose the Ale House. It is definitely out of the way, it is not a typical tourist trap. They serve fantastic pizza and a variety of craft beers.

We ordered 15 pizzas in advance so they were ready for our group a few minutes after we arrived. Our pizza smorgasbord and beer was the right choice. Our eight day safari in Timbavati and the Sabi sands was over the top amazing and yet my 15 guests still rave about our first day in Hartbeespoort eating pizza and drinking beer...And part of that genius was ordering the pizzas in advance. It was our first meal together, so it was a fantastic way to bond and get to know one another.

If you are interested in great pizza and craft beer in a more genuine location near Hartbeespoort that is not a tourist trap, my 15 guests and I would all definitely recommend the Ale House.

Such a noncommercial, feel good, relaxed vibe. Not an awful lot of drink choice, but the beer was different and delicious. Loved it. And the pizza is amazing!

Simply adore this place, although I do not drink beer the owner has always accommodated me with sangria, hunters or other wine. He always makes us feel at home, and you can see by his clients how happy they are. Once i fell over some mud, and the owner was the first one there to help me up (i was 36 weeks pregnant) he made sure I was ok, and washed the mud from my legs and gave me a complimentary pizza and non-alcoholic beer. I recommend this place to each and everyone, no matter what age, race or language.

The pizza is some of the best I have had here in Joburg and the beer is great as well. Eclectic bunch of people who go here and often there is great live music. A great place to spend an afternoon and meet people.

Been here a few times, even though it might not look like much from the get go,with mismatched tables and chairs all scattered around, but the beer has always been good, especially the Buchu (Boegoe??), and their pizzas are fresh and delicious! They do accommodate Vegetarians and Plant Based / Vegans if you ask them to and specify your needs.
Dirk (The Owner) offers a personal touch by greeting visitors and the dachshunds love lying around in the sun.
Personally I love a place that is so relaxed, but which still offers good quality products and a personal touch.

Will always return.

Probably the best little pub selling their own artisan brewed beers and great pizzas. Perfect outdoor relaxed venue for an excellent pint or few. Apparently only open on weekends. The them is more of a memory to the Irish and Boers who fought the English during he Anglo Boer wars. Great lawn for picnics maybe?

After a round of golf we needed to chill for the afternoon. No better place to go. Extremely relaxing. Crafted beer on tap, excellent pizza made in front of you. A great place to relax for the afternoon with friends.

A little dirt road leads one from the main road to a little gem caught in yesteryear.
The Ale house is a no-pretences little hartbees-house that looks like Sir Percy Fitzpatrick would come round the corner any moment with Jock (of the bushveld) on his heals.
On the stoep you find long benches and more tables under the large Karee trees. stepping inside the house, you are surprised how small it is with only one or two places to sit inside and the bar that sells mainly their own craft beer.
Two of their signature beers are the Boegoe ale and Irish Red Ale.
The Boegoe is a spicy and aromatic herb infused ale that some will love and others won't touch. The Irish Red ale is a good representation of the beer type, but if available, try their aged red ale. extra ageing brings out the flavours and a beautiful deep red colour.
Sitting on the stoep, one can see the pizza "kitchen" a small shed with pizza oven and stainless steel tables where they craft pizzas one would expect in some of the best restaurants in the city. The pizzas are as interesting as the beers. Do not be afraid to try something new.
Speak to the Brew-master and the pizza chef, they are pleasant and love to hear your inputs.

the place is a favourite for mountain bikers and other people how visit the area over weekends. So if you are in the area, stop by for a brunch after a race or go have a few beers and enjoy the picnic vibes under the trees.

This place sell as home brewery....2 beers, o/w one empty. The other one had color and temperture of urin. Pizza is the only food and was very good. Summary: Great place, but they must make efforts to serve proper chilled beer.
