I happened to be in Jo'Burg on business and wanted to do some riding before I left late evening. I'm an intermediate rider so enquired whether it would be possible to accomodate me on an appropriate horse for a half-day private safari. Beate could not have been more helpful and arranged to collect me from my hotel near OR Tambo airport. As I had the whole day, Beate kindly suggested that I ride at both La'WiiDA Lodge and Ostrich Manor, which was a lovely surprise for which I was most grateful. Upon arrival at La'WiiDA I was given water, assigned a lovely horse and introduced to my guide, Howard, who I found to be a happy, polite, friendly and helpful fellow. We set off and rode at a perfect pace to match my ability and the environment; getting into a fast canter where appropriate, but walking slowly to take in the wildlife we encountered along the way. This included Zebra, Giraffe, Springbok, Kudu, Wildebeest and many more - all of which we got very close to. We also saw lots of birds.
The experience was repeated when I arrived at Ostrich Manor, and Beate had prepared a nice picnic for me so I could refuel before my next ride. I rode another lovely horse and saw lots more wildlife. Beate then returned me to my hotel in time for my flight home, despite the rush-hour traffic we encountered along the way!
In summary, I can testify that both La'WiiDA Lodge and Ostrich Manor are excellent. Having the opportunity to see wildlife on horseback is a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend this to anyone staying in or around the Jo'Burg area - both venues are easily accessible. As a regular rider and someone who is used to being around horses, it is clear to me that these horses are much loved, well trained and properly cared for. There are horses to suit all abilities including those that have never been on a horse before, so this really is something anyone can do. The staff take pride in their work and obviously love their jobs. You will definitely be taken care of. Can't recommend highly enough!
