Hartbeespoort Dam is a popular tourist destination in South Africa, offering various activities and attractions to visitors. One of the main attractions is the Harties Cableway, which offers panoramic views of the beautiful Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam, and the surrounding areas.

Visitors can also take a scenic drive around the dam and over the dam wall [2]. Additionally, there are various water activities that one can do on the dam, such as boating and fishing.

Visitors can also visit the Bush Babies Monkey Sanctuary, where they can take a guided tour and walk around the sanctuary to observe the monkeys in their natural habitat. In addition to these attractions, visitors can also enjoy good food, great memories, and a day filled with activities.

It’s a beatiful drive out there no matter where you are coming from since the nature in that whole area is gorgeous. There is unfortunately quite a bit of garbage by the lake and around the dam but the dam itself is beautiful and quite clean.
There were swallows zooming around in the air and there is a freshness due to the water. The dam itself looks a bit like a smaller version of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, though it is obviously not as old, nor as large! The river is called Crocodile River, there are rapids and several waterfalls, the scenery was very beautiful. I was glad we drove out there! The dam was pretty too, with green lines of algae, that made stripes on the the dam where the water ran down.
The dam is quite large and nice to walk over. It’s worth a visit.

We came across this by pure accident while driving from the Elephant experience. we went up on the cable chair to the top the views are amazing, the bar at the top with little beanbags to sit on and just take in the views was a welcome rest point. the food place one level down was very cheap and the meals were huge we should have shared one again amazing views to look at while you eat along with seeing some beautiful birds and dragonflies.

Hartbeespoort Dam is even more impressive in person than it is in pictures. There are a lot of water activities that one can do. We were lucky to watch the dam spillway being opened as part of flood control.

Hartbeespoort, situated about 50km northwest of Johannesburg, is snuggled on the slopes of the Magalies Mountain and the banks of Hartbeespoort Dam. The name of the valley means “gateway of the Hartebeest (also known as Kongoni – Scientific name: Alcelaphus buselaphus)”. Hartbeespoort is the collective name of a few smaller towns situated around the Hartbeespoort Dam, including the towns of Meerhof, Ifafi, Melodie, Schoemansville and Kosmos. Schoemansville is named after General Hendrik Schoeman, a Boer General in the Anglo-Boer War, who owned the farm that the Hartbeespoort Dam was built on.

The Harties Cableway offers visitors panoramic views of the beautiful Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounding areas.

We visited on a Sunday midday.

Can get very busy and online bookings can be made.

No food or drinks allowed.

Safe for families.

Beautiful scenery and relaxing spots.

Food and ice cream sold .

Credit card facilities available.

Beautiful views of whole Hartebeespoort area.

Some history notes on information tablets along the walk in the gardens.

Other tourists activities available in the area of your choice according to age like small zoo snimal park,  lion park, elephant sanctuary, dam wall, upside down house, Eiffel tower miniature display for Photos, restaurants, flea markets, boat trips, zip line, etc.

Beautiful day out of activities.

If you visit the Hartbeespoort Dam you have to drive across the sluice and through the tunnel. It is scenic. Just get your timing right otherwise this can be frustrating. A single road with a lot of traffic at times can turn this pleasurable scenic 15 minute trip into a frustrating 40-minute nightmare.

The dam is filthy. There are a lot of rubbish and huge tree stumps in the dam. As a resident who wants to enjoy our boat rides.... We were embarrassed to take our guests out onto the dam.

I ran Om die Dam which was the opportunity to visit Hartbeespoort dam.
I've actually been disappointed by the whole experience, because the dam banks are almost all closed and fenced and you can barely see the water. Even a whole settlement, Kosmos, is locked up...
You really feel the commercial / business orientation...

We loved our night in Hartbeespoort, as our accommodation was awesome. However, before we left this morning we took a walk down to the waters edge and were horrified and frankly disgusted at the beer bottles and plastic bottles all along the waters edge... Why would anyone want to launch their boats there or take a boat cruise. I certainly wouldn't.

As good as the accommodation was, we won't make a trip back due to the filth both in the water and along the road to Cosmos.
