We highly recommend a visit to The Walter Battiss Museum. He was such a creative artist and interesting person. Ros is extremely knowledgeable and helpful and a very welcoming host. We spent almost 3 hours at the museum. Our visit has been a highlight of our trip.

Somerset East

Somerset East is one of the busier Karoo towns. There is a sense of life and growth. The imposing Boschberg mountains loom overhead and serve as a constant reminder of how tiny we are.

In the Karoo we have seen that mother nature reminds that we are just mortal. The Walter Battiss museum is man's response. The art and it's messages are heady and deserve patience and respect. A quick glance would say they are nonsense, but this art collection (quite large at over 80 paintings) in an old building argues for purpose, for beauty, for joy, for ideas as truth.

There is art in recreating a landscape, but recreating and shaping our worldview is masterful. A poignant reminder that this world is all made of 'someone's' ideas. And we can make our own. We all have the ability to make our own world.

We were greeted by a very warm friendly curator, watched a wonderful film on some of Walter's life.
We then saw an excellent collection of his works on 2 floors of what was the family hotel.
This museum with gift Shop is the highlight of Somerset East and well worth the visit.. absolute gem.

The museum has a nominal entrance fee and contains a great selection of Walter Battiss’s art, including some work from other artists that he owned. An interesting video is played at the start of the museum, to help you understand his artwork better.

A fascinating stop for any art lover and highly recommended.

Definitely worth spending a couple of hours in this place. There is a 40 min video which is worth watching for the insight it provides but for more in depth detail, the lady running the places is a mine of information about the artist!

This museum is run by a very organized passionate lady, Ross Turner. She is always prepared to go the extra mile to open the doors of the museum. It is a delightful experience to visit the museum.

A very interesting visit, shown round by Ros, who was extremely knowledgeable. The history of the building itself was also very interesting.

The Walter Battiss Art Foundation has perfectly preserved a whimsical piece of South African history.

The visit we had was informative and joyous , showcasing the works of a master artist whose quirky philosophy on life is sure to make anyone smile. The video presentation is a must see! It sheds light on his character which in turn helps understand his paintings better.
