In the region of Terra Alta tarraconense we find a town that is pure historical memory: CORBERA DE EBRO.
The current town of Corbera de Ebro, with about a thousand inhabitants, is located at the foot of the original, known today as the Poble Vell. Misfortune fell on him during an episode of the Spanish Civil War, the Battle of the Ebro. And this is because the people were completely destroyed and the inhabitants were abandoning it and settled at the bottom of the mountain, where it is today. The Poble Vell of Corbera de Ebro has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest as a historic place. Currently, it preserves the ruined houses and the remains of the church of Sant Pere. In this impressive space, “The alphabet of freedom” has also been installed, which is a symbol and monument of world peace.
The new Villa that was built on the plain after the disaster stands out for the church of Sant Pere that was built again. And the highlight is the 115-day Interpretation Center, which gives a complete overview of what the Battle of the Ebro was like.
Corbera de Ebro is pure historical memory, scars in memory that must survive so as not to forget what should never be repeated.

Amazing historical heritage location with a great opportunity to learn about the roots of the Catalan Revolution. We were lucky enough to receive an on-site explanation from the creator himself Mr Jesus

We are newly retired to the area and were interested in understanding more of the local history. We drove up to the site of the abandoned village which sits on the top of the hill of the villagre of Corbera D'Ebre, well sign posted from the main road with a few parking spaces.
A lovely gentleman who was tending a garden told us to follow the letters of the alphabet and that someone was in the Church to explain more.
There is no clear signage and in our random fashion we meandered between sets of ruins in this village which was bombed in the civil war in the 1930s and has remained mostly in an abandoned state until recently when it is being developed. The signage is mostly only in Catalan so difficult for us to comprehend. The messages depict peace and moving forward not forgetting the atrocities of war.
The paths are cobbled and rough terrain so good shoes are needed. it was a cooler day but there is little shelter from the sun. We arrived at 1pm so only entered the church at 13.45 and it closes at 14.00hrs.
A lovely member of staff spoke to us in English and gave us 2 small leaflets with some written information in English regarding the village and a second leaflet in French Spanish Catalan and English.
3 euros or 2 for pensioners,
We walked up narrow steps up into the bell tower of the church, no handrail, not for the weak kneed amongst us. lovely views over the area and abandoned village, but we needed to use our phone torches at one point as their was insufficient illumination.
in the body of the church is a small seating area with a video looping around in Catalan with Spanish subtitles.
I think so much could be done to attract more British tourism to the area with better information or translation. I understand the need for Catalans to acknowledge their language, but this village could be so more impactful with some investment into signage and English information. More varied tourism could help this.
It was haunting to stand is such a peaceful beautiful place and know that the history was so violent. I found the museum in Gandesa much more informative and would recommend that visit above this one, sadly. The church had a drinks machine and sale of books etc.

Poble Vell de Corbera d'Ebre are remains of a town bombed by fascist aviation in the Spanish Civil War during Ebre Battle. It is located in the South of Catalonia. Until Spanish Civil War in this location there is the town, but and due to the bombs, it was destroyed. Ten years after, a new town was constructed near this position and they used a lot of stones of the old town, so now you only can see a few remains of. the old town: the church (now converted in a museum), some main streets and some houses. in fact, now it is converted in a outdoor museum, where you can see the remains, an exposition in the church and some sculptures about peace in the town. Very interesting to see the destroy of wars.

Although the guide had in-depth knowledge about the visit, it is ONLY intended for Catalan speakers because when we informed him that there were people who did not understand Catalan, he made the whole visit in this language. We suggest that visitors be advised when the guided tours are only in Catalan so that visitors do not understand this language can do without the visit. We suggest you inform the visitor.
