We had the pleasure of a return trip to Costa Rica in late January. As always, Casagua Horse Tours was a major part of our trip. We cannot imagine visiting the country without at least a few days at this beautiful place. This is Costa Rican hospitality at its very best from the lovely rooms and great food to the wonderful riding. The horses never disappoint, and it’s due to the careful, compassionate training they have received and the daily care they receive. Kay and Esteban’s attention to every little detail always ensures that our stay is comfortable and fun. Trip #9 is in the works!

I never write reviews but for some reason this experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I called the ranch yesterday to see if they had any availability for a tour today. They said they’d recommend 3pm since it won’t be too hot - I was apprehensive since it had rained everyday around that time and told them so. They said they could offer 11am as well but it is the hottest part of the day. I asked them if it was possible to schedule for 3pm but if the weather was looking bad in the morning for the afternoon, I would call to come at 11am. She said no problem - it would be 80 USD in cash. I ended the call with, “I’ll see you tomorrow at 3”. Today, I wake up, weather looks fine for the afternoon so I make no call. I head to an ATM and take out 55,000 colones since I have not had to use cash for anything else on my trip thus far. I drive 30 minutes from Tamarindo to the ranch and arrive a few minutes after 3pm. I get to the ranch and get puzzled looks from some workers - one tells me to call the person I talked to yesterday, and I do. She says “we waited for you at 11am, you were supposed to call”. I figure that there’s been some miscommunication on both our parts. For that I would take a star or two off because if there was a more official booking system, this would never have happened. But I’m standing outside my car looking around talking to this person while she tells me there’s nothing she can do. Never once does she come outside to speak to me face to face, take any sort of responsibility, or act sincere in any way. So now I’m left with $80 in a currency I will not need after tomorrow and have wasted an hour of gas. There are other places that offer a more professional service.

If you are looking for a Costa Rica memory to take home, there is no better place to find it than Casagua Horses. This was not our first trip to Kay and Esteban's little corner of paradise; it was our sixth. As I read through past reviews and those of other visitors, I'm so impressed with the consistency. Whether you are an occasional, beginning or experienced rider, Casagua Horses has something for you. Kay and Esteban are the definition of kindness and hospitality. This kindness extends throughout the ranch from the beautifully cared for horses to their concern that everyone enjoy their stay. Whether it's a short ride or a visit of a few days, this place does not disappoint. The only downside is leaving. And yes, we are planning trip #7!

A visit to Painted Pony Guest Ranch is to experience Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This was not our first visit; actually it was our fifth. On our visits to Costa Rica we have stayed in a variety of hotels and had wonderful experiences. However, a trip would never be complete without a stay to Painted Pony Guest Ranch. Kay and Esteban treat each visitor like family. It's the perfect place to relax and enjoy pura vida with howler monkeys in the trees and the horses grazing in the pastures. We have had a chance to take lessons with Esteban who is one of the best teachers we've ever had. The trails through the towns and countryside are always a treat, and Esteban enjoys sharing his home territory. Kay is equally knowledgeable about the horses and answers our endless questions. Plus, her breakfasts are not to be missed! Even if you don't ride, Painted Pony Guest Ranch is a great choice. If you do ride, this is the way to experience part of Costa Rica's horse culture. I cannot think of another place which only gets better each time we visit. No matter how long we stay it is never enough and we start looking forward to the next trip as we leave for home.

Had an amazing time staying with Kay and Estoban. The horses are amazing and so incredibly well schooled it was an honour to be able to ride them. Kay’s hospitality is 2nd to none and the food outstanding - might all sound gushing but believe me it’s true!

I took my 7 year old daughter to visit the Casagua Horse ranch. I was impressed that the training was not just about riding the horse, but included all of the important things a beginner should know about the history of horses, their health, how to approach them and how to walk around them.

They were so patient in showing her how to get in the saddle and how to communicate with the horse using the reins. My daughter had a great experience, and when we return to Costa Rica, we will definitely be returning to Casagua Horses Tours for more horse back riding.

Thanks, it is so important to introduce children (and adults) about how to be around horses and build a fountation for riding for a lifetime. So many people are afraid of horses because they had a bad experience. We want to build partnerships, safely and having fun at the same time. Please come back soon.

I had a fantastic time. Kay, Esteban and all the staff really pushed the boat out. Everything was perfect; accommodation very clean, cosy and comfy; the horses are a treat to ride; food was incredibly tasty and plenty; all very well organised and Kay and Esteban are so knowledgeable. We had great rides through villages and on the beaches. I am already planning my next stay :-)

This was our fourth visit to Casagua Horse Tours, and we cannot envision a trip to Costa Rica without including it in our itinerary. That's how great this place is. No matter which ride you choose, this is the way to see the Guanacaste countryside while enjoying exceptional horses. Kay and Esteban always make sure that every rider has a unique experience even for return riders like us. Esteban is a master horseman and many riding levels are accommodated. Kay takes care of the endless details so there are no worries. If you can, stay for a few days to enjoy great hospitality and pura vida! We are already planning trip #5.

Gracias, it is always a pleasure to have riding friends return. There are always new things to experience in Paradise. And to give you a variety of steeds, our homegrown horses are growing up to provide new riding partners. Looking forward to planning trip 5 with you.

I and my two teen daughters had a delightful 4 day stay at the ranch. Seeing Costa Rica from atop a fine horse was the highlight of our trip. Kay and Esteban were the best of hosts. Custom planning for each day worked out wonderfully. Next time we will stay for a week. I highly recommend this private ranch stay

We took our 2.5 year old daughter here to ride a horse in their pen. We called ahead the day before and Kay offered to fit her in for 30 minutes before they took regular riders out on their tour. We can’t thank her enough for being so generous with her time. Kay didn’t just put our daughter on a horse and ride her around which is what usually happens elsewhere. She took the time and taught my daughter about horses and their shoes and how to touch the horse and where to look while riding. My daughter got to touch the horses feet and even groom the horse at the end with a brush. It was such a positive experience. We will definitely be back the next time we come to CR. Kay even introduced her to their dogs and cats. My daughter couldn’t have been happier. Thank you so much!!!

You are most welcome.. We really enjoy introducing children, young people and even adults to horses...the right way. We always want them to have a positive experience with horses and be safe. We sometimes are strict, but riding with children in front of parents or going out on trail rides before they can handle a horse, is not safe. By having a good experience, they will want to ride again...and for a life time. And the biggest reward is to see them smile and fall in love with their horse. Thank you.
