This is a review of just the beach, not the town, shops, and restaurants. This was our least favorite beach in the area. The sand is brown, like dirt. The water, at least in late August, was very murky. There were very small waves. It was not pleasant to swim in or to sit on the sand.
There was ample parking and usually just one or two people in the water, if that. We were staying at the Breeze Pacifico Resort, but ended up driving to Playa Flamingo which we found much, much prettier.

Not as described, we did some research before booking an Airbnb in del coco and it was dead wrong. The beach in Del Coco is pretty sad, it's more of a place for the fishing boats to pick up customers. It's pretty dirty and sketchy at night. There's a couple of decent places to eat but not enough to stay in that neighborhood and deal with the smog and filth. Save yourself money and find a place in playa Hermosa or playa panama less than twenty minutes away much cleaner and safer or go south to Tamarindo

Wanna shop? Come to Coco Beach. Beautiful town, lots of shops, you can try to barter with some of the folks, but most stick with their prices. Good street meat, dont be afraid to try it, it's safe, cooked on fire bbq, spices, it's really good ( my mouth is watering).
Beach is nice. Didn't use the beach, walked by it and its lovely. Didn't try the restaurants (too busy eating the street meat, lol)
Overall nice place to shop

Our original plan to travel to Costa Rica was due to a work related event. Thanks to some friends we were able to extend our stay at the Jade Condos in the area. As our first time here we were pleasantly surprised to see many tourists and locals who speak English. They helped orient us and gave us tips to navigate the area. The area itself is busy and has plenty of restaurants, groceries, vendors, and of course the beach within walking distance. Prices here are relatively the same as in Canada. There is a 10% gratuity added to restaurant bills. We felt safe in the area. The beach is unique given its dark sand, but it could use a regular schedule of garbage pick up. Vendors will try to sell their goods, but they are friendly and not pushy. If visiting in February, get ready for some glorious sun and heat!

We were a bit disappointed with the beach sand which is from a volcanic source. It is a very long beach for those who like to walk it. The usual activities such as sunset cruises, diving and fishing are available. There are plenty of restaurants with good food. Within an hour drive is a great Diamante Eco Adventure Park with zip lines, a wolrd class animal sanctuary and other activities.

Compared to many of the other areas we visited in Costa Rica this was our least favorite. We chose this area for the last two days of our trip because of the proximity to the airport. The town was dirty and the beach was not very good. It has a good party scene so if you like that it would be an OK spot for about two days. Also, it may be a good diving spot . Luckily our hotel ( Puerta Del Sol) was comfortable and had a nice restaurant, bar and pool.

We visited Coco just as the CR border re-opened in August 2020. Everyone was super friendly and happy to see us and we felt the same about them 🖤 Had great take-away pizzas from Nonna Rina and nice walks along the beach. There's a little waterfall on one of the far ends of the beach. Great spot to chill with some beers!
Whilst on Coco beach, we bumped into Eduardo who we had the best times with. Eventually, we discovered Eduardo had a fishing boat so we went out with his team while we were there. I can't describe how much fun this was, we saw some incredible sea life including a humpback whale (!!) and stopped off on a nice little beach with some caves. Sadly we can't remember what Eduardo's business was called, but watch out for him on the beach, he's a great laugh and one of the best people.
We stayed in one of the Tico beach houses right on the beach where there were tonnes of iguanas! (and lots of mozzies, ouch)

Very busy tourist town area. Black sand beach. Sting rays were in the water. Views are beautiful. Lots of shopping options. Very congested. Street peddlers also selling items. We heard many expats have settled there in condos and homes.

We took our rental car there since we heard it was nice and had a boardwalk, but once we parked and walked the beach there wasn't much else to do. The beach was great if you wanted to go and relax, there were plenty of vendors and excursions on offer, but otherwise it was just souvenir shops and a few open air restaurants. Unless we missed something. In our minds it wasn't worth the 35 minute drive from our hotel.

Hi
Just read your post. We r from Kingston so almost neighbours.
We leave in a week for Coco. Staying the winter.
Happy to hear I may be able to watch my leaf games.
I see the rates for tours etc are very high.
Did you take in any places on your own.
Written 5 January 2019
yes. we rented a golf cart and putted around. We had our own stand-up paddle boards but we did rent a guy and his boat to take us surfing $140/pp for all morning out to Witches rock. Also a guy will take you to private beaches for a reasonable rate. I have a contact for fishing - "Big Mike". He is originally from Newmarket. He usually hangs at Coconutz but if you wish I could get contact info.

Hi
Great posts. Arriving in 9 days for the winter.
Love my hockey. Will zmurphies play my leaf games if requested?

The peeps at Coconutz were really accommodating for hockey games. At Zi's, only the bar staff would accommodate.

Hi Cathy
Playa del coco itself is not ideal for snorkelling but there are tour companies which you can easily find who specialise in snorkelling tours and scuba diving. My suggestion would be to ask important questions like do they provide equipment and if there is an additional charge for pick up from the place you are staying? You maybe surprised to that some charge extra for these which adds to the price. Enjoy your holiday, hope you found this helpful

I'll be in the Playa del Coco area for about a week. I was wonder how much I should have in Colons and US currency? I'll obviously have my credit cards, but I know I should carry some cash too. Any suggestions?
Written 22 April 2018
It really depends on how much you will be spending....more expensive restaurants or doing your own cooking etc...
I liked using the local currency although US funds are accepted everywhere. Some restaurants though give a 2 to 1 exchange (I. E if something is 5000 colones they charge you 10. 00 US. with the exchange rate I believe you end up ping more,
Keep in mind too that if you pay in US you will get colones in change.
I'd start with at least 400.00 whether in colones or dollars. There are bank machines if you need more.
Hope this helped

information about coco dental care, playa coco
Written 5 March 2018
There are good dentists and a good emergency clinic in Coco. For dental surgery you will probably go to Liberia, twenty miles away. Medical and dental tourism is number one in Costa Rica taking over Mexico’s spot. A member of my last group fell and broke their hip in Coco. Had emergeysurgery and excellent care in Liberia and back to Coco the next day for a week of rehab and physical therapy. You might consider a medical dental insurance that is good in Costa Rica.
