About
A township tour in Cape Town should be great for everybody - the visitor should experience connectedness and a contribution to the lives and hearts of real people, and the hosts should feel that they have blessed their visitors with something of Africa's beauty and ingenuity. PROUDLY MACASSAR POTTERY upskills and employs young people who have not finished school. When these youths receive our visitors as part of our TOWNSHIP CLAY EXPERIENCE, guiding them through clay exercises or teaching them how to play the musical instruments we make from clay, we are celebrating humanity. We are connecting the dots. Places and people that have been divided, unite. We all discover beauty in what we thought were unlikely places. This is more than African arts and crafts. It is the craft of living and loving well; the art of doing life together. Proudly Macassar Pottery received the UnLtd SA entrepreneur's award for 2012, and was a finalist in the 2013 Premier's Entrepreneurs Recognition Awards.

The products at Macassar pottery are of the finest quality and all hand made. The true beauty of Macassar pottery though is its purpose; the training and upskilling of youth who didn't receive educations. We came in as a university group and Johan gave us a presentation of sorts that was unlike anything I've seen before. He was authentic, incredibly smart and very passionate; his presentation has shifted my entire way of viewing our country. I could not recommend Macassar pottery enough.

Our family really enjoyed this opportunity to spend some time in meaningful reflection while getting our hands dirty. We were able to talk through good questions together and think on our own. Great way for children to engage. All of the staff were knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Highly recommended experience!

Proudly Macassar Pottery is a must if you are visiting Cape Town. The story of the Macassar township is fascinating. In the midst of that challenging township, Proudly Macassar Pottery is striving to bring down the barriers among its inhabitants, and to give opportunities to its youth. The Pottery is really a special environment. I felt it was a family. It is worthwhile visiting Proudly Macassar Pottery and sharing their experience.

Visited the Macassar Pottery - brilliant concept - pottery, music and development of business skills for staff. Vibrant, warm place run by a lovely team..

I am planning a "Pray with Clay" workshop very soon.

Great experience.

My experience at Macassar Pottery was like no other. The conversation that was fostered there genuinely and truly changed many of my perspectives on how i approach and communicate with others in this life. Hitting me completely by surprise ,It delved significantly in such depth in such a short period of time, yet all while sensitive to everyone's individual experiences. The imagery of clay and pottery is for much more than creation of art.I would HIGHLY recommend a visit. You will never forget it.

I didn't know what to expect when I visited Macassar Pottery but in the end I walked away with a greater understanding of South Africa's history and culture and learned more about myself through the clay modeling activities. If you want to understand the dynamic of South Africa's different communities than no tour will be better than Macassar Pottery. You do not need to be an art and sculpture lover to enjoy this experience.

Thank you to Johan for allowing us to come and spend the afternoon with him and his amazing team at Macassar pottery. It was so interesting to learn about how they are using pottery and music to build community with those living in Macassar and to positively impact so many lives. We had fun making things with the clay, painting a musical instrument and then joining with the group to make music using the clay drums. Thank you for a memorable afternoon.

Coming from Germany, we were spending a two weeks holiday near Cape Town, when our friends asked us to join them for a trip to the Macassar pottery workshop "Finding beauty in unlikely places". We just want to say this: Thank you, Johan and your group for the very best two (or was it three?) hours we spent during our stay in S.A.! Yes, we found a lot of beauty in an unlikely place and we start to understand what you meant by the "sound of the ground". You all really touched our hearts, and we would wish that your spirit will infect other people and lead to the success you wish for.
